CHAPTER 2 — The Price of Silence

Andrew stepped toward Clara.

"I'm sorry."

She looked at him quietly.

"Are you?"

He swallowed.

"I didn't know."

"You didn't ask."

Those four words echoed through the ballroom.

Patricia suddenly interrupted.

"This is still my son's wedding!"

"No."

The venue manager answered before Clara could.

"This is Miss Mason's property."

Patricia lunged toward the presentation screen, trying to disconnect it.

Security stopped her.

The guests watched in disbelief.

Several members of the Whitlock family quietly slipped toward the exits.

They understood what was happening.

Then Clara revealed the final surprise.

"I invited everyone here for another reason."

The ballroom doors opened again.

Nearly fifty elderly men and women entered together.

Some walked with canes.

Others in wheelchairs.

Every one of them smiled warmly at Clara.

"They're former employees of my grandfather."

The old workers had once maintained the estate before it was sold.

Many had never returned.

Tonight, Clara welcomed them home.

Each received a lifetime pension funded by the profits from her company.

Several of them cried.

One elderly gardener embraced Clara.

"You kept your promise."

She smiled through tears.

"I never forgot."

Around the ballroom, guests began standing.

Not for the wedding.

For Clara.

One by one, applause filled the room.

Andrew remained standing alone.

For the first time in his life, he realized that betrayal isn't always an action.
