Chapter 2: The Truth Behind the Kitchen Door

Chapter 2: The Truth Behind the Kitchen Door

No one moved.

The ballroom outside continued to pulse with music and laughter, but inside the industrial kitchen, time itself seemed to stop.

Mateo never took his eyes off the chef.

"The mother of my daughter?" he repeated quietly.

His voice was calm enough to frighten everyone in the room.

The chef lowered her head.

"My name is Elena Morales," she whispered. "Five years ago... before your company went public... we were together."

Valeria laughed.

"Oh, please. She's lying because she's desperate."

No one joined her.

Mateo studied Elena's face.

The bruise on her cheek was fresh.

The pain in her eyes was years old.

"Everyone out," he ordered.

Within seconds the kitchen emptied, leaving only Mateo, Elena, and Valeria.

Valeria folded her arms confidently.

"You don't actually believe this nonsense."

Mateo ignored her.

"Look at me," he told Elena.

She did.

"I need the truth."

She inhaled shakily.

Five years earlier, Mateo had been involved in a devastating car accident during an overseas business trip.

He had suffered partial memory loss for several months.

Their relationship disappeared from his memory.

When Elena discovered she was pregnant, she tried to find him.

Every letter was returned.

Every phone call was blocked.

Every meeting was canceled before she could reach him.

She believed he had abandoned her.

What she never knew...

...was that someone had intercepted every attempt.

Valeria.

Long before becoming Mateo's fiancée, Valeria had secretly controlled his schedule while working as his executive assistant.

She had destroyed every message Elena ever sent.

Every ultrasound photo.

Every handwritten letter.

Every birthday card addressed to a father who never knew his daughter existed.

Mateo's face slowly lost all color.

"You knew?"

Valeria swallowed.

"It was business."

"No."

"It was survival."

"You were building an empire," she snapped. "A pregnant chef would have ruined everything."

Mateo stared at her as though seeing a complete stranger.

At that moment, his phone vibrated.

A DNA laboratory had just finished processing an emergency test Elena had requested weeks earlier.

He opened the report.

Probability of paternity:

99.9998%.

His knees nearly gave out.

He wasn't just looking at an employee.

He was looking at the woman who had protected his child alone for five years.
