CHAPTER 2 — The Dinner Everyone Misunderstood

Daniel stared at the ring as though it were nothing more than another dramatic gesture.

"Emma... what is this?"

She didn't answer.

Jonathan Reed quietly placed his weathered briefcase on the dining table and unclasped the brass locks.

The room fell silent.

Daniel's parents exchanged irritated glances.

His younger sister rolled her eyes.

Even the house staff instinctively stepped back.

Jonathan removed a single folder.

"Mrs. Carter instructed me not to begin until exactly 8:15."

Daniel laughed.

"You actually hired a lawyer because of tonight? This is ridiculous."

Emma finally looked at him.

"It isn't because of tonight."

She paused.

"It's because tonight was the first time you embarrassed me in front of strangers instead of only your family."

No one spoke.

Jonathan slid several photographs across the polished table.

Each one captured moments no one expected Emma to know.

Daniel mocking her after charity events.

His mother ordering servants to remove Emma from family portraits.

Bank statements showing money quietly transferred from Emma's inheritance into accounts Daniel controlled.

Emails.

Voice recordings.

Signed financial authorizations.

Tiny acts of betrayal.

Years of them.

None dramatic by themselves.

Devastating together.

Daniel's smile disappeared.

"You've been collecting evidence?"

Emma nodded.

"For six years."

"You planned this?"

"I survived it."

Jonathan calmly placed one final envelope on the table.

"Mrs. Carter has already filed for divorce."

No one reached for their wine again.

The dinner was over before anyone touched dessert.
