CHAPTER 1 — THE RING

The ring rested in the middle of the table.

No one reached for it.

Not Daniel.

Not his parents.

Not the business partners who had been invited to celebrate another successful quarter.

Crystal glasses glittered beneath the chandelier, but the room suddenly felt darker.

Daniel forced a laugh.

"Emma, stop making a scene."

She looked at him calmly.

"I haven't even started."

At precisely 8:15, the front door opened.

Jonathan Reed entered without hesitation, carrying an old leather briefcase that looked decades older than his tailored suit.

Every eye followed him.

Daniel frowned.

"What is this?"

Jonathan offered a polite nod.

"Good evening. Mrs. Carter requested my presence."

Emma stood.

"For seven years," she said quietly, "I've listened while everyone in this room called Daniel a self-made man."

Silence.

"Tonight we're finally going to tell the truth."

Jonathan placed the briefcase on the dining table.

Click.

The brass locks opened.

Inside sat dozens of neatly organized folders.

Contracts.

Bank statements.

Property deeds.

Audio transcripts.

Photographs.

Daniel's smile disappeared.

"You've been spying on me?"

Emma met his eyes.

"No."

"I've been surviving you."

Jonathan slid the first folder across the polished wood.

"Mrs. Carter retained my firm three years ago."

Three years.

Daniel's face drained of color.

"You planned this?"

May you like

Emma answered without emotion.

"I planned my escape."
