Chapter 1 – The Man Everyone Misjudged

Chapter 1 – The Man Everyone Misjudged
The engagement gala glittered beneath crystal chandeliers, where the city's wealthiest families gathered to celebrate another carefully arranged union.
Nathan Ashford stood quietly near the balcony.
His charcoal suit was perfectly tailored, yet nothing about him demanded attention. Most guests assumed he was another assistant or family employee.
Sophia Hart certainly did.
"You?" she scoffed when he approached.
Nathan opened a small velvet box.
Inside rested a simple platinum ring.
"I wanted to ask you one last question before I leave."
Sophia laughed loudly enough for nearby guests to hear.
"You honestly think I'd marry someone who drives himself to work?"
Her friends burst into laughter.
Without hesitation, she pushed the ring away. It struck the marble floor and spun between their feet.
"You've mistaken kindness for affection."
Nathan bent down, picked up the ring, and smiled politely.
"I understand."
Before anyone could continue mocking him, a security officer entered the ballroom.
"Mr. Ashford."
The room fell silent.
"The board has arrived. The shareholders are waiting. Your helicopter is ready."
Curious whispers spread through the crowd.
Nathan simply nodded.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, a sleek black helicopter settled onto the private landing pad.
Across its side gleamed silver letters.
ASHFORD INTERNATIONAL HOLDINGS.
Sophia's smile disappeared.
Her father slowly stood from his chair.
"No..."
He recognized the logo immediately.
The young man they had insulted wasn't an ordinary guest.
He was the newly appointed chairman of the company every business family in the city dreamed of partnering with.
Nathan walked away without looking back.
For the first time in her life, Sophia realized that wealth doesn't always announce itself.
