Part 1: The Woman at the Door

: The Woman at the Door
The loud slam made both boys jump.
An old wooden door from the building behind them swung open, and a middle-aged woman stepped outside. She wore a simple gray coat and carried a basket of groceries. At first, her expression was stern.
“What's going on out here?” she asked.
The hungry boy immediately pulled away, afraid he was about to be chased off again.
But the woman noticed something that stopped her.
The smaller boy was sharing his only piece of bread.
Not selling it.
Not showing off.
Sharing it.
The woman looked at the thin child sitting against the wall and saw how badly he was shivering.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Then her face softened.
“Both of you, come inside,” she said.
The hungry boy lowered his eyes.
“I... I can't pay.”
“You don't need to,” she replied gently.
The boys followed her into the warm apartment.
The smell of soup filled the air.
The hungry boy could hardly believe his eyes as she placed a steaming bowl in front of him.
He ate slowly at first.
Then faster.
Then faster still.
The woman quietly wiped tears from her eyes.
No child should ever know that kind of hunger.
That evening, she learned his name was Daniel.
He had been sleeping on the streets for months after losing the only family he had.
The other boy was named Noah.
When Noah heard Daniel's story, he looked at him firmly.
“You don't have to be alone anymore.”
Daniel stared at him.

No one had ever said those words before.
And for the first time in many months, hope entered his heart.
