Chapter 2: The Night Everyone Forgot

PART

2: The Night Everyone Forgot

The father ordered the guests out within minutes, but no one truly left. They lingered outside the gates, hungry for answers.

Inside the villa, only four people remained.

The child.
The maid.
The father.
And the woman in white.

The maid was finally seated on the edge of a long sofa, the boy still in her lap. He refused to be put down, his small fingers gripping her uniform as if fabric alone could keep her from vanishing.

The father stood across from her.

“Seven years,” he said slowly. “We buried our sons seven years ago.”

The maid’s eyes lifted at that.

“Sons,” she repeated.

The woman in white stepped forward. “Yes. Twins. There was an accident. Only one body was ever recovered properly—”

“No,” the maid interrupted sharply.

Her voice shook, but it didn’t break.

“There were two children that night. I was there.”

The room went still again.

The boy looked up at her face.

At that moment, something flickered in his memory—too faint to name, too heavy to ignore.

Rain. A car. Screaming. And her hands pulling him free.

The father’s voice dropped.

“Then why did we bury an empty coffin?”

The maid swallowed hard.

“Because I only had time to save one of them.”
