Chapter 2 – The Truth Behind the T-Shirt

That evening, black cars lined the entrance to the Grand Regency Ballroom.

Photographers crowded behind velvet ropes.

Business leaders.

Actors.

Athletes.

Everyone wanted to attend the Harper Foundation's annual charity gala.

The woman arrived wearing the same glittering gold suit.

She smiled confidently until security blocked her path.

"There must be some confusion," she said.

"My invitation."

The guard scanned the list.

"I'm sorry, ma'am."

"Your registration has been canceled."

She stared.

"What?"

Before the guard could answer, another limousine stopped.

The young girl stepped out.

Gone were the old sneakers.

Gone was the faded T-shirt.

The white gown shimmered beneath the lights like falling snow.

Reporters rushed toward her.

"Miss Harper!"

"This way!"

"Can we have a photo?"

Camera flashes exploded across the entrance.

The woman watched in disbelief.

The girl noticed her.

She walked over.

Not to gloat.

Not to insult.

Simply to speak.

"You judged my clothes," she said softly.

"You never wondered why I wore them."

The woman couldn't answer.

"I volunteer every Saturday."

The girl smiled gently.

"The children at our shelters don't care what brand I wear."

She looked toward the ballroom.

"My father taught me something before he died."

"If people only respect your clothes..."

"They never respected you."

Then she walked inside.

Leaving the woman standing alone behind the rope.
