PART 3

PART 3

Grace felt cold.

“What do you mean... you weren't finished?”

Caleb looked completely broken.

“I wanted her to experience what Beatrice experienced.”

Robert slammed his fist onto the dresser.

“You don't destroy someone's mind because they destroyed someone else's.”

“I know!”

Caleb shouted.

“I know!”

His voice echoed through the empty bedroom.

“I hated myself the moment she started crying.”

Grace spoke softly.

“What exactly happened?”

Caleb swallowed.

“I locked the storage room.”

“She thought no one would help her.”

“I played the recordings.”

“One after another.”

“People accusing Beatrice.”

“Managers calling her a thief.”

“The sound of doors closing.”

“She kept begging me to stop.”

His shoulders shook.

“I wanted one confession.”

“I got it.”

“But she kept talking.”

Grace looked at him.

“She said something you weren't expecting.”

Caleb nodded slowly.

“She said…”

"I tried to tell everyone later."

Grace frowned.

“What?”

“She claimed she went back.”

“She tried to admit the truth.”

“But management refused.”

“They had already closed the investigation.”

Robert frowned.

“You believed her?”

“I didn't.”

“Not at first.”

Caleb took out another folder from his backpack.

“These arrived yesterday.”

Grace opened it.

Inside were anonymous copies of internal company emails.

One sentence immediately caught her attention.

"The missing funds were transferred by CFO Martin Hensley."

Grace looked up.

“That wasn't Beatrice.”

“No.”

“That wasn't Katherine either.”

Caleb nodded.

“The company discovered the real thief months later.”

“They covered it up.”

“Because exposing it would have triggered lawsuits.”

Grace's heart pounded.

“So Beatrice was innocent.”

“Yes.”

“And Katherine?”

Caleb looked exhausted.

“She lied.”

“But not about everything.”

“She falsely accused Beatrice because management pressured employees to identify someone.”

“She chose survival.”

“She became part of the cover-up.”

Grace whispered,

“My God…”

“She wasn't innocent.”

“But she wasn't the mastermind.”

Robert rubbed his forehead.

“You married someone you hated…”

“…without knowing the whole truth.”

Caleb nodded.

“I destroyed the wrong person.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Then there was a knock.

Frank entered quietly.

“Katherine wants to speak.”

Grace immediately stood.

“She needs a doctor.”

Frank shook his head.

May you like

“No.”

“She wants the police.”
