Chapter 9 - The Trap I Built For My Husband

For the first time since the hotel incident, I contacted Grant.
Not because I missed him.
Not because I wanted answers.
Because I wanted him to believe he was winning.
The message was simple.
"I want to talk."
Within minutes, he responded.
He agreed to meet.
The location was his choice.
A private restaurant.
A place where he felt comfortable.
A place where he believed he controlled the situation.
But he did not know one thing.
Every word would be recorded.
Every movement would be monitored.
Every lie would become evidence.
When Grant arrived, he looked different.
Less powerful.
More desperate.
“Mara.”
I looked at him across the table.
“Why?”
He sighed.
“I know you hate me.”
“That is not an answer.”
He looked away.
“I was trying to protect myself.”
I almost smiled.
“You were trying to steal my daughter.”
His expression changed.
For a second, the mask disappeared.
“I never wanted to hurt Ellie.”
“But you were willing to hurt me.”
Silence.
Then Grant said something unexpected.
“Someone forced my hand.”
I watched him carefully.
“Who?”
He hesitated.
That hesitation was the first real crack.
“Marcus.”
The name confirmed everything.
Grant looked terrified.
“He promised me control.”
“And what did he promise you in return?”
Grant said nothing.
Because the answer was obvious.
Ellie.
The inheritance.
The empire.
Before leaving, Grant whispered:
“You have no idea what Marcus is capable of.”
May you like
I stood.
“Neither did you.”
