Chapter 11 - THE BLOODLINE LIE

The independent DNA test took forty-eight hours.

Those forty-eight hours felt longer than my pregnancy.

Ivy slept.

Fed.

Cried.

Stretched.

Made tiny faces as if the world had not placed a billion-dollar conspiracy around her bassinet.

I envied her.

My mother stayed nearby.

Luka moved constantly between attorneys, federal offices, and old Moretti records.

Sloane disappeared into protective custody.

Evan prepared to testify.

Charles remained detained on the hospital kidnapping charge while his attorneys attacked every other allegation.

The case became news.

Not the full M-17 story.

Not yet.

Only enough.

HALCYON CHAIRMAN QUESTIONED IN HOSPITAL ABDUCTION CASE.

NEWBORN AT CENTER OF DISPUTED PATERNITY TRUST.

I hated the headlines.

They made Ivy sound like property.

Dana kept our names partially sealed.

Temporarily.

Then the DNA results arrived.

University lab.

Court chain-of-custody.

Three comparisons.

I asked Luka to be in the room.

My mother too.

Dana.

Nobody else.

The report began simply.

Ivy was my biological daughter.

No surprise.

I still cried when I read it.

Because after so many manipulated records, even obvious truths felt sacred.

The second comparison used preserved verified DNA from Matteo Moretti.

Probability of paternity:

99.9998%.

I stopped breathing.

Matteo.

A dead man.

A stranger.

My daughter’s biological father.

Luka looked at the wall.

His eyes shone.

He did not speak.

I reached across the table.

Touched his hand.

He looked at me.

“She’s his.”

I whispered.

He nodded.

“Yes.”

For a moment, all the money disappeared.

All the crime.

All the lies.

There was only a brother learning that part of his brother still lived.

Then Dana turned the page.

Sloane’s test.

The result was more complicated.

Sloane was not Charles Holloway’s biological daughter.

Elaine Mercer had lied.

Again.

Sloane was genetically related to the Moretti line.

Closest supported relationship:

Half-sibling relationship to Matteo Moretti.

Luka went completely still.

I stared.

“Sloane is Matteo’s half-sister?”

Dana nodded.

“Based on these markers.”

Luka looked physically sick.

“That means…”

His voice failed.

My mother finished.

“Antonio had another child.”

Luka stood.

“No.”

He walked to the window.

“Antonio was married to my mother.”

Marianne spoke carefully.

“Affairs happen.”

“He wasn’t—”

He stopped.

I recognized the sentence.

Defending a parent from a truth you had not known.

I knew that feeling now.

Dana continued.

“There may be another explanation.”

“What?”

“Stored genetic material.”

The room chilled.

My mother stared.

“No.”

Dana looked at her.

“You said the program involved reproductive samples from Antonio.”

“Yes.”

“Then Sloane may have been conceived using his sample.”

Luka turned.

“Without his consent.”

“Possibly.”

History repeating.

Sloane was not Charles’s daughter.

She was another M-series child.

A child created from stolen Moretti genetic material.

I felt sick for her.

“She spent six months believing the man controlling her was her biological father.”

My mother whispered.

“Yes.”

“And he knew that wasn’t true?”

Dana looked grim.

“Probably.”

“Why tell her he was her father?”

“Control.”

Luka’s voice was flat.

“Same reason he does anything.”

Dana turned another page.

“There’s more.”

Of course.

A historical match.

Sloane’s DNA aligned with sample M-11.

Not M-17.

I stared.

“So M-11 was Antonio?”

“Yes.”

“Then M-17 was Matteo.”

“Yes.”

“Charles used the Moretti family twice.”

“At least.”

Luka’s face turned cold.

The seventeen donor lines were not seventeen families.

Some were repeated members.

Different samples.

Different genetic targets.

The master archive had been intentionally fragmented to prevent victims from understanding the pattern.

We opened Thomas’s genetic list.

M-11:

Antonio Moretti.

M-17:

Matteo Moretti.

M-03:

A famous judge.

M-04:

A physician.

M-08:

A professional athlete.

M-12:

A Nobel-nominated researcher.

My skin crawled.

Charles had treated human beings like a private genetic catalog.

“What about the children?”

Dana looked at me.

“We are appointing a sealed medical guardian.”

“Will they be told?”

“Adults can choose.”

“And minors?”

“Families will receive counsel.”

I thought of forty-three people.

Potentially more.

Lives about to split into before and after.

Just like mine.

Luka returned to the table.

“Where is Sloane?”

“Safe.”

“I need to talk to her.”

Dana shook her head.

“Not today.”

“She is my sister.”

“Half-sister.”

His eyes hardened.

Dana held firm.

“She just learned her identity was manufactured.”

Luka stopped.

Then nodded.

He understood.

So did I.

Some truths deserve a minute before they become somebody else’s reunion.

Evan testified the next day.

The hearing was closed.

I watched from a separate room.

He described his father’s control.

The assignment to approach me.

The marriage.

The fertility plan.

The threat.

The poisoning of my father.

He did not minimize his role.

That surprised me.

The prosecutor asked.

“Did you knowingly participate in deceiving your wife about donor conception?”

“Yes.”

“Did you sign authorization documents?”

“Yes.”

“Did you conceal your infertility?”

“Yes.”

“Did you steal Thomas Vale’s letter after his death?”

“Yes.”

“Did you destroy evidence?”

He paused.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“What evidence?”

“An early copy of M-17.”

“Why?”

“My father ordered me.”

“Did you benefit financially from the marriage?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Trust access.”

“Did you love Grace Holloway?”

Charles’s attorney objected.

The question was withdrawn.

Evan still answered.

“Yes.”

The judge told him to stop.

He looked directly at the camera.

At me.

Then faced forward again.

Later, Dana asked about the day of my procedure.

“Did you know the donor was Matteo Moretti?”

“No.”

“Did you knowingly authorize M-17?”

“No.”

She displayed the form.

“Your signature appears here.”

“The donor code was changed after I signed.”

“Can you prove that?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Evan looked toward Charles.

“My father kept originals.”

Charles’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But Evan saw it.

“Where?”

Evan swallowed.

“His home vault.”

Charles spoke for the first time.

“Liar.”

The judge warned him.

Evan continued.

“Vault behind the wine cellar.”

Dana looked at an agent.

A search warrant was requested.

Granted.

That night, federal agents entered Charles Holloway’s estate.

They found the vault.

Inside:

Original fertility authorization.

Donor code D-441.

Evan had told the truth.

A second page showed the alteration.

Handwritten:

Replace D-441 with M-17.

Signed:

C. Holloway.

My anger toward Evan changed shape.

Not disappeared.

Never.

He had deceived me.

He had agreed to donor conception without my informed consent.

He had concealed infertility.

He had participated.

But he had not chosen Matteo.

Charles had.

The vault contained more.

A recording.

Thomas Vale’s poisoning.

Charles speaking.

Sloane’s mother protesting.

Evan calling emergency services.

And one more video.

Seven years earlier.

Matteo Moretti entering a Halcyon office.

Alive.

Angry.

Luka stopped breathing when he saw it.

The timestamp was three hours before Matteo’s fatal car crash.

Matteo stood across from Charles.

“You used my father’s sample.”

Charles smiled.

“You cannot prove that.”

“I found M-11.”

Charles’s face changed.

Matteo continued.

“You created a child.”

My stomach turned.

Sloane.

He had discovered her.

“I know about Elaine.”

Charles stepped closer.

“What do you want?”

“All Moretti samples destroyed.”

“And if I refuse?”

“I release everything.”

Charles laughed.

“You don’t know where everything is.”

Matteo smiled.

“I know enough.”

He placed a drive on the desk.

“And I changed Helix-9.”

Charles’s smile disappeared.

“You cannot access it without me now.”

Matteo’s last words on the video were quiet.

“If something happens to me, my heir will finish it.”

The recording ended.

Luka sat down.

For several seconds, he did not move.

Then he covered his face.

His brother had known.

Maybe not about Ivy.

But about the possibility that his genetic line could outlive him.

Sloane was brought in to view the recording.

When she saw Matteo say, “You created a child,” she began crying.

“That was me.”

Luka sat across from her.

“Yes.”

They looked at each other.

Brother and sister.

Strangers.

Victims of the same family secret.

Sloane laughed through tears.

“I spent my whole life afraid of Charles because I thought he was my father.”

Luka’s voice broke.

“He wasn’t.”

“My real father never knew me.”

“Antonio died before you were born.”

“I know.”

“You have me.”

She looked at him.

The tattoos.

The hard face.

The man she had once believed was dangerous.

“Is that supposed to make me feel better?”

Luka almost laughed.

“No.”

Then she reached across the table.

He took her hand.

Quietly.

No dramatic embrace.

No instant family.

Just contact.

A beginning.

Dana entered.

“We found something else in Charles’s vault.”

We all turned.

She carried a sealed envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

Addressed to Luka.

His name written in Matteo’s handwriting.

Luka froze.

“What is that?”

“Never opened.”

He took it.

His hands shook.

Inside was a letter.

And a small key.

Matteo’s message was short.

Luka,

If I’m dead, do not waste your life avenging me.

Luka closed his eyes.

Find the archive.

Protect the people Charles used.

And if there is ever a child carrying my DNA, that child is not a key, not an heir, and not a weapon.

I stopped breathing.

Luka continued reading.

That child is a person.

His eyes moved to me.

Then Ivy.

Make sure everyone remembers that.

Tears ran down Luka’s face.

He did not wipe them.

The final line:

The last proof is where our father taught us never to look.

Luka frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Sloane whispered.

“Never look back.”

He stared at her.

Then understanding struck.

“The old Moretti house.”

The house where their father raised them.

Sold twenty years earlier.

We drove there with federal authorization.

The property now belonged to a charity.

Behind the garage stood an old well.

Antonio had always warned his sons never to look down it.

Not because it was dangerous.

Because beneath the stone rim was a sealed metal compartment.

Matteo’s key opened it.

Inside was the original Helix-9 research archive.

Laboratory notebooks.

Patent drafts.

Consent records.

And one final envelope.

Label:

FINAL PATERNITY DISCLOSURE — GRACE HOLLOWAY.

My blood froze.

I stared at Luka.

“Why is my name on Matteo’s archive?”

No one answered.

I opened it.

Inside was not Ivy’s test.

It was Evan’s.

A prenatal comparison.

Ivy.

Matteo.

Evan.

And a fourth person.

The report contained a note.

EH sample shares unexpected first-degree paternal relationship with CH sample.

I looked at Dana.

“What does that mean?”

She read it twice.

Then her face changed.

“Evan is Charles’s biological son.”

“That isn’t unexpected.”

“No.”

She pointed lower.

“The unexpected part is this.”

Another comparison.

EH sample shares significant kinship with M-series subject 08.

My stomach tightened.

“Who is M-08?”

Sloane searched Thomas’s list.

Then stopped.

Her face went white.

“M-08 is Marianne Vale.”

The room went silent.

I stared at my mother.

Then at Evan’s report.

No.

Impossible.

Dana read the technical note carefully.

Then exhaled.

“This does not mean Evan is related to Marianne directly.”

Relief barely arrived.

“It means part of his recorded genetic profile was substituted.”

I frowned.

“What?”

Sloane understood.

“Charles falsified Evan’s medical identity.”

“Why?”

She looked at the report.

“Because Evan may not be the child Charles says he is.”

May you like

The ground shifted again.

And suddenly the man who had spent his entire life obeying Charles Holloway might not even belong to him.
