Chapter 1: The Sentence That Changed Everything

The silence stretched for several long seconds.

My mother waited for me to smile.

My sister slowly pulled one earbud out, confused by the expression on my face.

Neither of them expected what came next.

"You have exactly ten minutes to pack your things and leave my house."

No one moved.

My mother blinked.

"What did you just say?"

"You heard me."

She let out a nervous laugh.

"Oh, don't be ridiculous. We've been helping Emily all week."

I looked at the overflowing trash can.

The sink packed with dirty dishes.

The untouched laundry spilling from baskets.

The groceries still lying on the kitchen floor.

Then I looked back at Emily, who could barely stay on her feet.

"This is what you call helping?"

My sister crossed her arms.

"We're guests. We shouldn't have to do chores."

I almost laughed.

"Guests?"

"You invited yourselves here after insisting Emily would need support while I was away."

Mom's smile disappeared.

"We kept her company."

"You watched her drown."

The room fell silent again.

Emily whispered, "Please... don't fight."

I squeezed her hand.

"This isn't a fight."

"It's the last conversation we're ever going to have about this."

Mom stood up.

"You're choosing your wife over your own family?"

I answered without hesitation.

"I am choosing the person who has carried this family on her back while the rest of you watched."

She stared at me as though she'd never seen me before.

Good.

Because the son she used to manipulate no longer existed.

Ten minutes later, they rolled their suitcases down the driveway.

Mom stopped beside her car.

"You'll regret this."

I looked at Emily holding Leo against her shoulder.

"No."

"I'd regret staying silent."

They drove away without another word.

The house became wonderfully quiet.

For the first time in days...

Emily smiled.

It was small.

May you like

Fragile.

But real.
