Chapter 15 - MIDNIGHT

Detective Cole refused to let me go alone.

So we made Gloria believe I did.

The note directed me to Dad’s old farmhouse forty miles south of Nashville.

The property had been sold years ago.

It now stood empty awaiting redevelopment.

Police positioned themselves beyond the tree line.

I wore a wire.

At 11:57 p.m., I entered.

Gloria sat at the old kitchen table.

The same table from the fake trust video.

My stomach turned.

She had reconstructed everything around Dad’s memory.

“You brought it?”

“No.”

Her expression darkened.

“Then why are you here?”

“To hear you explain.”

“I don’t owe you an explanation.”

“You stole from Dad.”

“I saved your father.”

“You stole from Rachel.”

“I protected her.”

“You stole from me.”

“I built you.”

There it was.

The core belief.

Everything I possessed belonged to her because she had given birth to me.

“You think my life belongs to you.”

“Don’t be dramatic.”

“You tried to take my house.”

“You would have kept living there.”

“Under your control.”

“You’re careless.”

“You tried to take my trust.”

“You don’t know how to manage wealth.”

“You tried to take Caleb.”

Her face changed.

“I was protecting him.”

“From his mother?”

“From both of you.”

Anger burned through me.

“Hannah was washing dishes with a sick baby because you wouldn’t let her stop.”

“She needs discipline.”

“She’s an adult.”

“She lives because you provide everything.”

“No.”

I stepped forward.

“She lives because she is my partner.”

Gloria laughed.

“You really believe that little performance?”

“What performance?”

“The exhausted wife.”

“The frightened mother.”

“She knows exactly how to control you.”

I suddenly understood.

Gloria truly believed everyone manipulated the way she did.

She could not imagine love without leverage.

“Where’s Caleb’s pendant?”

She smiled.

“So sentimental.”

“Where is it?”

“In my purse.”

“Why take it?”

“So you would come.”

“You could have called.”

“You stopped answering.”

I almost laughed.

For Gloria, a boundary was an attack.

“You want Dad’s ledger.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because it contains private family matters.”

“You mean crimes.”

“You sound like that detective.”

“Maybe because she’s right.”

Gloria stood.

“You think these people care about you?”

“Who?”

“The police.”

“Noah.”

“Daniel.”

“Your precious Rachel.”

She moved closer.

“When the money comes, they will tear you apart.”

“You mean like you did?”

Her eyes flashed.

“I gave up everything for this family.”

“What?”

“My career.”

“Your father never appreciated what I sacrificed.”

“What did you sacrifice, Mom?”

“My life.”

There was genuine pain in her voice.

For one second I saw the human being beneath the damage.

Then she destroyed the moment herself.

“So yes.”

“I took what I was owed.”

I stared at her.

“Dad’s money?”

“Owed.”

“Rachel’s inheritance?”

“Owed.”

“My house?”

“I was securing my future.”

“My son?”

She hesitated.

“Caleb needs someone strong.”

I pressed my tongue against my teeth.

“What would have happened to Hannah?”

Gloria looked away.

“What were you planning?”

“She would have left eventually.”

“Because you were starving her financially?”

“I was teaching her.”

“Because you told me she couldn’t handle money?”

“You believed me.”

That sentence cut deeper than she intended.

She was right.

I had.

“Why the guardianship petition?”

“If you and Hannah separated, someone needed stability.”

“And you planned to create the separation.”

Silence.

That was enough for the wire.

Then I asked the question Detective Cole wanted.

“Who forged Dad’s video?”

Gloria smiled.

“You’re recording me.”

My blood went cold.

“How?”

“You touch your jacket every time you’re nervous.”

She walked backward.

“You did that as a child.”

Then she pulled something from a drawer.

Not a weapon.

A lighter.

She held it over a stack of papers.

“Mom.”

“You want the ledger?”

She smiled.

“It was here all along.”

My heartbeat thundered.

Dad’s master ledger lay beneath her hand.

“Don’t.”

“You came without it because you never found it.”

She had possessed it.

All these years.

“Then why break into my house?”

“To see whether Harold left another copy.”

“Gloria.”

A voice came from outside.

Detective Cole.

“Put down the lighter.”

Mom’s face changed.

She hadn’t realized how close they were.

Officers entered from both doors.

Gloria looked at the ledger.

Then at me.

For one horrible second, I thought she would burn it.

Instead she laughed.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Understand what?”

She lowered the flame.

“The ledger doesn’t destroy me.”

Detective Cole took it from her.

Gloria lifted both hands.

“It destroys your father.”

I froze.

“What?”

She looked at me as officers cuffed her again.

“You made him a saint because he died.”

May you like

Her eyes moved to the ledger.

“Read page eighty-seven.”
