CHAPTER 18 — The Brother I Never Knew

The room went silent.
No one moved.
No one even seemed to breathe.
Harold Sterling's image remained frozen on the monitor, his tired eyes staring directly at me from across time.
"...James Ashcombe is not the leader of the Society."
"...He's only protecting my eldest son."
I stared at the screen, unable to process the words.
"My father's..."
I swallowed.
"...eldest son?"
The sentence itself made no sense.
I was Harold Sterling's only child.
At least, that was what I'd believed for forty-three years.
"No."
I shook my head.
"There has to be a mistake."
Agent Pierce rewound the recording.
Harold's voice played again.
Clear.
Steady.
Undeniable.
"...my eldest son."
Detective Alvarez slowly leaned back.
"If Harold chose those words carefully..."
"...then Richard wasn't his first child."
The realization settled over the room like a heavy fog.
Someone had existed before me.
Someone my parents had never mentioned.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Evelyn Ross opened Harold's archived family records.
Birth certificates.
Marriage licenses.
Tax filings.
School records.
Everything listed only one child.
Richard Sterling.
"No adoption."
"No second birth certificate."
"No legal record."
Pierce frowned.
"If the child existed..."
"...someone erased him."
Olivia Bennett quietly stepped forward.
"I knew."
Every head turned toward her.
"You knew?"
She nodded once.
"Not everything."
"But enough."
"Why didn't you tell us?"
"Because Sarah made me promise."
Sarah.
Even now, she was still protecting secrets.
Olivia took a slow breath.
"Twenty-eight years ago..."
"...Harold entrusted me with a little boy."
The room froze.
"He couldn't have been more than six."
"He had dark hair."
"Gray eyes."
"He never spoke."
"Not once."
She paused.
"He stayed with me for three months."
"What happened to him?"
"James came."
"And took him away."
I felt sick.
"Who was he?"
Olivia slowly met my eyes.
"I don't know his real name."
"But Harold called him..."
"...Gabriel."
The name stirred something deep inside me.
A memory.
Small.
Almost forgotten.
A birthday party.
I couldn't have been older than five.
Another little boy standing beside my father.
Laughing.
Then...
Nothing.
As if the memory had been torn away.
Pierce immediately requested facial reconstruction using old family photographs.
The AI compared childhood images from Harold's archive.
Within minutes...
One photograph appeared.
It showed Harold standing beside two boys.
One was me.
The other had been partially torn from the picture.
The reconstruction software restored most of the missing face.
The resemblance was unmistakable.
He looked like me.
Not identical.
But close enough to be family.
Same eyes.
Same jawline.
Same smile.
Charles Whitmore whispered,
"My God..."
Pierce enlarged the back of the photograph.
Someone had written:
Richard and Gabriel — Summer 1988.
I stared at the words.
I had a brother.
Not a cousin.
Not a friend.
A brother.
And every trace of him had disappeared.
Ross quietly asked the question everyone feared.
"Why would Harold hide his own son?"
Olivia answered.
"He didn't."
"He was trying to save him."
According to Olivia, Gabriel had been born during Harold's first marriage.
Years before Harold met my mother.
Gabriel's mother died when he was only three.
Harold raised him alone.
Until the Society discovered the boy.
"Discovered what?" I asked.
Olivia looked toward Maya.
"They believed certain families should control the future."
"They wanted heirs they could shape from childhood."
"Gabriel was chosen."
Harold refused.
"They took him anyway."
Silence filled the room.
"They kidnapped him?"
Olivia nodded.
"Officially..."
"He disappeared."
"Unofficially..."
"They raised him."
The words struck like ice.
"They raised my brother?"
"Yes."
"For almost forty years."
Pierce quietly spoke.
"If that's true..."
"...then Gabriel has spent his entire life inside the Society."
Ross finished the thought.
"He may believe they're his family."
Another technician hurried into the room.
"Agent Ross."
"What now?"
"We finished analyzing the old address book."
"The Legacy List?"
He nodded.
"There's another section."
He opened a scanned page.
Each rescued child had a symbol beside their name.
Most carried a blue circle.
Some carried a black square.
Only one name carried a gold star.
Gabriel Sterling.
Beside it, Harold had written one sentence.
If I fail him... save Richard instead.
I couldn't speak.
For the first time in my life...
I understood.
My father hadn't loved me more.
He'd simply believed Gabriel was already lost.
Late that evening, Maya wandered into the quiet conference room carrying Bunny.
She climbed onto the chair beside me.
"Daddy?"
"Yes?"
"Are you sad?"
I smiled weakly.
"A little."
"Because of your brother?"
I nodded.
She thought for a long moment.
Then said something no one expected.
"I've seen him."
Every adult in the room turned.
"You what?"
She looked surprised by our reaction.
"The nice man."
"The one at Mommy's funeral."
"He gave me a chocolate coin."
My heartbeat stopped.
"What did he look like?"
"He smiled."
"He looked like you."
"But older."
My hands began to shake.
"When was this?"
"The day everyone was crying."
"I was outside with Bunny."
"He said..."
She closed her eyes, remembering.
"Take care of your daddy for me."
Tears filled my eyes.
"He knew who I was?"
Maya nodded.
"He called you..."
"...little brother."
The room fell into stunned silence.
Gabriel had been at Sarah's funeral.
Close enough to speak to Maya.
Close enough to see me.
Yet he hadn't revealed himself.
Why?
Before anyone could answer, Pierce received another encrypted message.
He opened it.
Attached was a single image captured by a traffic camera less than two hours earlier.
A black sedan leaving downtown Philadelphia.
The driver's face had been enhanced.
Everyone recognized him instantly.
James Ashcombe.
In the passenger seat...
Sat another man.
Early fifties.
Dark hair streaked with silver.
Gray eyes.
His profile matched the reconstructed childhood photograph almost perfectly.
Pierce looked at me.
"We found Gabriel."
The room held its breath.
Then Pierce enlarged the image one final time.
Gabriel wasn't wearing a silver lion ring.
He wore something different.
A plain gold wedding band.
And around his neck...
Hung a faded wooden cross.
The same kind Sarah always wore.
Ross frowned.
"That doesn't make sense."
"What?"
"If Gabriel truly leads the Society..."
"...why is he still wearing Sarah's cross?"
Before anyone could answer...
A secure phone rang.
Pierce answered.
His expression immediately changed.
"What?"
He looked toward me.
"Gabriel just contacted the FBI."
Silence.
"He says..."
Pierce swallowed.
"...he wants to surrender."
The room erupted.
Alvarez was the first to react.
"It's a trap."
Ross wasn't so sure.
Pierce slowly lowered the phone.
May you like
"He'll only speak..."
"...to Richard."
