Chapter 16 - THE THING ELI REMEMBERED

The discovery changed me.

Until then, some part of me had searched for an explanation.

Jealousy.

Fear.

Debt.

A distorted belief that my father had wronged Nathan.

Something that could explain how the boy who followed me around our childhood home became the man who watched my wife bleed in a ravine.

My father’s recording destroyed that illusion.

Nathan knew.

He always knew.

He had not become a monster because the family betrayed him.

He became one because consequences offended him.

There was freedom in understanding that.

I stopped trying to explain him.

We focused on stopping him.

The flash drive contained metadata leading to a remote server.

Emily had built an archive.

Not alone.

Sarah helped.

Elizabeth helped.

My father unknowingly provided the first evidence.

The archive connected Nathan’s fraud to Alder.

Federal investigators began arresting people.

Two attorneys.

A fiduciary.

A private investigator.

Dr. Larkin was captured crossing into Canada.

He immediately requested a lawyer.

Then a deal.

Cowards become cooperative when the structure protecting them falls apart.

Larkin admitted diagnosing Emily falsely.

He admitted altering my records.

He admitted sharing medical information with Vanessa.

Then he told prosecutors Nathan had discussed killing me.

Not directly.

Never directly.

“He asked how certain medications might affect cardiac rhythm.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

“What medication?”

Larkin named one.

My blood turned cold.

I had been prescribed it after a minor procedure three months earlier.

I stopped taking it because it made me dizzy.

Nathan had access to my medication list through Vanessa.

The life insurance policy.

The competency petition.

The medication questions.

Nathan had built multiple paths.

If I lived, he would discredit me.

If I died, Vanessa would become guardian.

Either way, he wanted Eli isolated.

Then Eli remembered something.

We were sitting in Julia’s kitchen.

He was drawing a dinosaur.

He looked up.

“Uncle Nathan gave me medicine once.”

Every adult froze.

“When?”

I kept my voice calm.

“When Vanessa was here.”

“What kind?”

“Pink.”

“For what?”

“He said it would help me sleep.”

Claire crouched beside him.

“Did you drink it?”

Eli shook his head.

“Miss Claire came in.”

Claire’s face went pale.

“I remember.”

She looked at me.

“I found Nathan in the pantry with Eli.”

“He said Eli had a fever.”

“I took the cup away.”

“What happened to it?”

“I poured it out.”

Nathan had been testing access to my son.

Maybe the medicine was harmless.

Maybe not.

We would never know.

That was the moment I understood something else.

Claire had not simply prevented Nathan from controlling Eli’s inheritance.

She may have prevented something far worse.

Emily’s letter had been right.

Trust her because she will choose Eli even when choosing him costs her everything.

Claire had done that repeatedly.

Even when I doubted her.

Even when Vanessa struck her.

Even when Nathan threatened her.

That night, I found Claire on Julia’s porch.

“You should leave.”

She looked at me.

“I thought we already had this argument.”

“I mean after this is over.”

Silence.

“You have spent four years living inside Emily’s war.”

“You found Sarah.”

“You protected Eli.”

“You don’t owe us the rest of your life.”

Claire looked toward the window.

Eli was asleep inside.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you still here?”

She thought for a long time.

“Because he loves you.”

“What?”

“Eli.”

“He watches the door whenever you leave.”

“He pretends he isn’t scared because he knows you’re scared too.”

“He needs somebody who can tell when he’s pretending.”

I looked at her.

“And you?”

She smiled sadly.

“I’m still figuring that out.”

We did not kiss.

This was not the moment.

Our lives were full of too much grief for easy romance.

But something changed.

Not love.

Not yet.

Trust.

A beginning.

The following morning, federal agents found Nathan’s financial escape route.

Cryptocurrency.

Offshore accounts.

A chartered aircraft reservation under an alias.

Departure scheduled in forty-eight hours.

Destination: Belize.

The aircraft required a transfer from a private river marina.

Gavin knew the route.

So did Marcus.

Sloan built a trap.

We leaked false information.

Elizabeth had died.

Claire had become trust protector.

The audit had discovered a secret untraceable account containing fifty million dollars.

Only Claire could authorize its release.

None of that was true.

But Nathan believed one thing about everyone.

Enough pressure could make them move.

The message reached him through Daniel Price.

Nathan responded.

He wanted Claire.

Sloan refused.

Claire volunteered.

I refused.

She looked at me.

“You don’t get to order me.”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

“He tried to poison Elizabeth.”

“He tried to take Eli.”

“I know.”

“He may kill you.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because he thinks I’m the last lock between him and the money.”

“He will come.”

She was right.

The operation was approved.

Claire would wear a wire.

Agents would surround the marina.

Nathan would believe she had agreed to exchange trust authorization for Eli’s safety.

At 8:17 p.m., a message arrived.

COME ALONE OR THE BOY LOSES HIS FATHER TONIGHT.

Not Eli.

Me.

Nathan had shifted targets again.

Claire looked at the message.

Then at me.

“He isn’t trying to get the money anymore.”

“What does he want?”

May you like

Her answer chilled me.

“To finish what he started with Emily.”
