CHAPTER 3 – A Promise Under the Old Oak Tree

Years passed.
The small oak tree Michael had planted before his final deployment grew taller every spring.
So did Leo.
At ten years old, he was already asking difficult questions.
One afternoon, while cleaning the attic, Leo found a dusty cardboard box.
Inside were dozens of medals.
Military patches.
Photographs from overseas.
Newspaper clippings praising Sergeant Michael Mitchell for saving civilians during an ambush.
Leo carried everything downstairs.
"Mom..."
Sarah looked up.
"Was Dad really a hero?"
She paused for a long moment.
Then she answered quietly.
"He was a good man."
"But everyone says he was brave."
"He was."
"Then why didn't he save himself?"
Sarah closed her eyes.
Because some questions never become easier.
She handed Leo the letter.
"The answer is in here."
Leo read every word.
Twice.
Then three times.
By the time he reached the final sentence, tears blurred the ink.
That evening, mother and son walked to the old oak tree.
Without saying a word, Leo dug a small hole beneath it.
He buried his father's broken watch.
Not because he wanted to forget.
But because time had stopped for Michael...
while life still had to move forward for them.
Leo placed one hand on the tree.
"I don't know if I'll become a soldier."
He looked toward the sunset.
"But I promise...
I'll become the kind of man you wanted me to be."
The wind rustled gently through the branches.
May you like
For just a moment...
Sarah could have sworn she heard Michael laughing.
