Chapter 3: Justice for Liam

Six months later.
The courtroom was silent.
Sarah stood before the judge.
Gone were the expensive clothes.
Gone was the confidence.
She looked smaller than I had ever seen her.
The prosecutor played Liam's recording one final time.
No one in the courtroom looked away.
Several jurors wiped tears from their eyes.
When the recording ended...
The judge spoke quietly.
"Children are not inconveniences."
"They are entrusted to us."
"When someone uses that trust to inflict fear and suffering, the betrayal reaches far beyond one family."
Sarah was convicted of child endangerment, unlawful imprisonment, and evidence tampering.
She received a prison sentence.
She also permanently lost her foster-care license and was barred from supervising children in any professional or volunteer capacity.
But punishment wasn't what mattered most.
Liam survived.
Recovery took months.
For weeks he refused to sleep unless Rachel or I stayed beside him.
Basements terrified him.
Closed doors terrified him.
Even birthday parties became impossible.
We found him a therapist who specialized in childhood trauma.
Little by little...
The smiles returned.
One year later, Ethan asked if Liam would come to his ninth birthday.
I expected Liam to say no.
Instead, he looked at me and smiled.
"Only if it's at the park."
"It will be," Ethan answered.
So we celebrated outside.
No locked doors.
No dark rooms.
Just sunshine.
Baseball.
Laughter.
And children running freely across open grass.
As I watched Liam chase his cousin through the field, I realized something.
Sarah had stolen one terrible afternoon from my son.
She would never be allowed to steal the rest of his childhood.
May you like
That day belonged to Liam.
And so would every tomorrow that followed.
