CHAPTER 3 — THE HUSBAND WHO LOST EVERYTHING

Eric looked at Natalie as though seeing her for the first time.
"You told me the baby was mine."
She sobbed.
"I thought it was."
"You said there couldn't be anyone else."
"I didn't know..."
His voice exploded across the ballroom.
"You lied to me!"
Then he turned toward me.
For the first time all evening, his confidence disappeared.
"I'm sorry."
"I made a mistake."
"A mistake?" I repeated calmly.
"A mistake is forgetting an anniversary."
"A mistake is burning dinner."
"You spent nearly a year betraying your wife."
"You looked me in the eyes every morning."
"You kissed me goodbye."
"You let me defend you."
His shoulders collapsed.
"I love you."
I smiled sadly.
"No."
"You loved having two women who believed your lies."
Silence answered me.
I reached into my purse.
Pulled out a cream-colored envelope.
Placed it in his hand.
He opened it.
His fingers began trembling.
Divorce papers.
Already signed.
Already filed.
"You planned all this?"
"For four months."
"I wanted the truth to expose itself."
"And tonight..."
"It did."
He dropped into a chair.
Everything he thought he controlled had disappeared within minutes.
Natalie rushed toward him.
"Eric..."
He stepped away.
"Don't touch me."
She froze.
For the first time in her life, she stood completely alone.
The applause began from somewhere near the back of the room.
One guest.
Then another.
Soon dozens of people were standing.
Not celebrating revenge.
May you like
Respecting dignity.
Because sometimes the strongest person in the room is the one who never raises her voice.
