CHAPTER 2: THE REAL OWNER

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Robert Miller laid a stack of documents across the dining table.

"This property," he said calmly, "was transferred three years ago."

My mother's face twisted.

"That's impossible."

Robert slid the first page toward her.

"It was your husband's decision."

Her hands shook as she read.

"No..."

"He placed the house into an irrevocable family trust."

She looked up.

"Then it's mine."

Robert slowly shook his head.

"No, Mrs. Brooks."

He turned another page.

"You were granted lifetime residency only if you remained the legal executor and treated both daughters equally."

Silence.

My stomach tightened.

"What happens if she doesn't?" I asked.

Robert met my eyes.

"The trust automatically transfers full ownership to the sole beneficiary."

He paused.

"Hannah Brooks."

My sister shot to her feet.

"That's a lie!"

Robert calmly produced another envelope.

"This contains your father's handwritten letter."

He handed it to me.

My fingers trembled as I unfolded the paper.

Hannah,

If you're reading this, I'm no longer here.

I know your mother loves your sister more than she'll ever admit.

I hoped I was wrong.

But if she chooses favorites after I'm gone, I need you to protect what our family built.

This house isn't a reward.

It's a responsibility.

Don't seek revenge.

Seek justice.

By the time I finished reading, tears blurred the page.

Mom looked at me.

Then at the letter.

Then back at Robert.

"This isn't fair."

Robert closed his briefcase.

"It isn't about fairness."

"It's about honoring your husband's final wishes."

For the first time all night...

My mother had nothing to say.
