Chapter 17 - COUNTERATTACK

The emails changed the case.

Natalie:

Claire asked Evelyn about the beneficiary statements again.

Evelyn:

Then accelerate Hearth.

Natalie:

Christmas?

Evelyn:

Yes. She is sensitive about her upbringing. Keep pressure there.

Another email.

Natalie:

If she leaves with Sophie?

Evelyn:

Ethan won’t allow it.

Natalie:

You’re sure?

Evelyn:

He always comes back.

I read that sentence for a long time.

He always comes back.

Mom had built her strategy around my weakness.

And she had been right.

For years.

Then Christmas came.

And for once, I hadn’t.

Mara filed an amended complaint.

Breach of fiduciary duty.

Fraud.

Conversion.

Civil conspiracy allegations.

Forgery-related claims subject to investigation.

The bank withdrew its attempt to enforce against Sophie’s branch.

That alone saved millions.

Ryan agreed to refinance or liquidate the second clinic to satisfy legitimate business debt.

He would lose money.

Possibly the clinic.

He accepted it.

Natalie returned from Canada through her attorney.

She claimed she had traveled because she feared Ryan’s instability.

Nobody believed that explanation entirely.

At deposition, she blamed Mom.

“Evelyn controlled the finances.”

Then:

“Evelyn told me Claire was dangerous.”

Then:

“I believed we were protecting Sophie.”

Mara played Denise’s recording.

Natalie’s composure cracked.

“You offered a vulnerable woman ten thousand dollars to sign a false statement.”

“I believed parts were true.”

“You wrote the false parts.”

Silence.

Mara showed her Project Hearth.

Natalie looked toward her attorney.

The attorney whispered.

Natalie refused to answer certain questions.

Then Mara showed the email about Christmas.

Make Claire lose control.

Natalie finally cried.

I expected satisfaction.

I felt none.

Just exhaustion.

Afterward, Natalie asked to speak to me privately.

Mara refused unless counsel attended.

So we met with lawyers present.

Natalie looked different without her armor.

“You think Evelyn did all this because she hates Claire.”

“I think both of you treated Claire like an obstacle.”

“You don’t know your mother.”

“I’m learning.”

Natalie laughed softly.

“No.”

She leaned forward.

“You still don’t understand why she needed control.”

“Money.”

“Partly.”

“What else?”

“Your father.”

My body went still.

“What about him?”

Natalie looked at her attorney.

Then back at me.

“Thomas was leaving.”

I frowned.

“Leaving what?”

“Your mother.”

Silence.

“He planned to divorce her.”

I stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“How would you know?”

“Because Evelyn found the papers.”

Caroline had never mentioned divorce.

Dad had never mentioned it to me.

Natalie continued.

“He was removing her from the trust because he was preparing to leave the marriage.”

My chest tightened.

“And Mom knew?”

“She found the draft.”

“When?”

“The night before he died.”

Everything inside me froze.

Natalie saw my face.

“No, Ethan.”

She anticipated the question.

“She did not kill him.”

I said nothing.

“He had a heart attack.”

“Then what is the secret?”

Natalie’s voice lowered.

“Your father called you from the hospital.”

My skin went cold.

“I don’t remember that.”

“You never got the call.”

“Why?”

“Because Evelyn had your phone.”

I stared.

“That makes no sense.”

“You were asleep at her house.”

I remembered.

Barely.

I had driven overnight after Dad collapsed.

Mom had told me he was stable.

I slept two hours.

When I woke, Dad was dead.

Natalie whispered:

“He left you a voicemail.”

My throat closed.

“What did it say?”

“I never heard all of it.”

“Who did?”

“Evelyn.”

“Where is it?”

Natalie shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“What did he say?”

She looked at me.

“He told you not to sign anything your mother gave you.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“And then?”

May you like

Natalie’s eyes dropped.

“He said he was sorry he had waited so long to tell you the truth.”
