Chapter 2 – The Boardroom Where Everything Changed

The boardroom fell silent the moment Ethan walked in.
He wore the same confidence he always carried.
Tailored navy suit.
Expensive watch.
Company badge clipped proudly to his belt.
The badge that no longer worked.
He frowned when security stopped him outside the executive floor.
"There must be a mistake."
"There isn't, Mr. Parker."
The guard's voice remained polite.
"Your access has been revoked."
Linda, who had insisted on accompanying him, stepped forward.
"Do you have any idea who my son is?"
The guard simply looked toward the reception desk.
"Former Executive Vice President."
That single word—
Former.
Ethan laughed.
"This is ridiculous."
"It'll all be cleared up inside."
The conference room doors opened.
Every board member was already seated.
The chairman looked unusually serious.
Then everyone stood.
Not for Ethan.
For me.
"Good morning, Ms. Parker."
Linda's smile disappeared.
She looked around the room, confused.
"Why are you standing for her?"
The chairman answered before I could.
"Because she's the Founder, Chief Executive Officer, and majority shareholder."
Silence.
Real silence.
The kind that crushes every illusion in the room.
Linda stared at Ethan.
"Ethan..."
He looked just as shocked.
"You told me..."
"I..."
He couldn't finish.
Because he'd lied.
For years.
He'd let everyone—including his own mother—believe the company belonged to him.
The chairman slid a folder across the polished table.
"Mr. Parker, the Board has completed its review."
Inside were copies of expense reports.
Personal vacations billed as business travel.
Luxury watches purchased with corporate accounts.
Bonuses approved using forged authorization codes.
Every page was highlighted.
Every signature examined.
Every lie documented.
"I can explain."
"No," I said quietly.
"You've been explaining for five years."
The chairman continued reading.
"By unanimous vote, your employment is terminated immediately for gross misconduct and breach of fiduciary duty."
Ethan's face drained of color.
Linda slammed both hands on the table.
"This company wouldn't exist without my son!"
I slowly turned another folder toward her.
"My original incorporation papers."
Dated three years before I ever met Ethan.
Next came photographs.
The tiny rented office.
The folding desk.
My first delivery truck.
My first employee.
The first million-dollar contract.
Every milestone.
Every one achieved before Ethan entered my life.
Linda stopped speaking.
For the first time...
she had nothing left to say.
Then our corporate attorney entered.
"There's one more matter."
He placed Ethan's employment agreement in front of him.
Page thirty-two.
Paragraph fourteen.
The clause.
"If employment is terminated for fraud, misuse of company assets, or intentional reputational damage, all unvested bonuses, stock incentives, deferred compensation, and executive benefits are immediately forfeited."
Ethan's hands trembled.
"No..."
The attorney nodded.
"In addition, the company reserves the right to recover financial losses caused by misconduct."
A final number appeared on the projector.
$3,842,117.46
The room became perfectly still.
Ethan whispered,
"I owe... the company?"
I answered calmly.
"No."
"You owe me."
That afternoon, news spread through every department.
The executive everyone thought had built Parker Freight Solutions...
had never owned a single share.

And the woman everyone assumed was simply his wife...
had been everyone's boss all along.
