Chapter 11 — The Third Child

For the first time in hours, Elena felt nothing.

No movement.

No flutter.

No kick.

Nothing.

Her hand remained pressed against her stomach.

“Marcus…”

He turned immediately.

“What?”

“The baby.”

His face changed.

“What about him?”

“He stopped moving.”

Daniel rushed for the medical bag.

“Sit down.”

Elena obeyed.

Marcus knelt beside her.

“Stay with me.”

She stared at him.

“What if something happened?”

“Nothing happened.”

“You don't know that.”

“I know we're getting you to a doctor.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not a hospital.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Why?”

“Blackwell owns too many.”

“Then where?”

“I know someone.”

Twenty minutes later, the lake house filled with emergency equipment.

Dr. Natalie Reed connected a portable monitor.

Everyone waited.

Nothing.

Elena's breathing became shallow.

Marcus held her hand.

Then—

A heartbeat.

Fast.

Strong.

Alive.

Elena sobbed.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Daniel exhaled.

Natalie stared at the monitor.

“That's strange.”

Marcus looked up.

“What?”

“The baby's heart rate changed.”

“To what?”

“Exactly three seconds after Elena's.”

He frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Natalie didn't answer.

She looked at Elena.

“Did you experience anything unusual?”

Elena hesitated.

“I heard a voice.”

Everyone went still.

“What voice?”

“A little girl's.”

Marcus stared.

“Isabella?”

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“It sounded younger.”

“How young?”

“Maybe four.”

“What did she say?”

Elena's face went pale.

“She said, ‘Mommy, I'm still here.’”

Natalie examined Elena again.

Then she pulled Marcus aside.

“I need to tell you something.”

“What?”

“The pregnancy is unusual.”

“How?”

“The fetus is responding to neurological stimuli at an abnormal level.”

Marcus stared.

“Meaning?”

“Meaning something is triggering the baby's nervous system.”

“Can you stop it?”

“I don't know.”

“Then find someone who can.”

Natalie looked toward Victoria.

“There's one person.”

“Who?”

“Your grandfather's original neurologist.”

Marcus frowned.

“He's alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Natalie hesitated.

“Boston.”

Marcus immediately understood.

“Blackwell.”

She nodded.

They left before dawn.

Two armored vehicles.

Daniel drove the first.

Marcus drove the second.

Elena sat beside him.

Victoria was secured in the back.

The children were with Daniel.

For the first time, Marcus felt the weight of his family history pressing against him.

Too many lies.

Too many dead ends.

Too many people who claimed they were protecting him.

Then Elena whispered:

“Marcus.”

“Yes?”

“I remember another room.”

He glanced at her.

“Where?”

“Blackwell.”

“What room?”

“Room three.”

“What happened there?”

“I don't know.”

She closed her eyes.

“But I remember someone crying.”

“Who?”

“A baby.”

“Alexander?”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Isabella.”

The Boston facility looked nothing like a hospital.

No sign.

No security guards.

Just a gray building surrounded by trees.

Daniel parked.

“Blackwell's private research center.”

Marcus looked at Victoria.

“Isabella is here?”

Victoria shook her head.

“Not anymore.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Marcus grabbed her arm.

“You're lying.”

Victoria stared at him.

“She left three months ago.”

“Why?”

“She discovered the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That she wasn't abandoned.”

Marcus froze.

“She was taken.”

“Yes.”

“By whom?”

Victoria looked toward the building.

“Her own father.”

Inside, they found Dr. Elias Mercer.

Eighty-one years old.

White hair.

Thin frame.

Eyes still sharp.

He looked at Elena.

Then immediately stepped backward.

“No.”

Marcus frowned.

“You know her.”

Mercer stared.

“I know what she carries.”

Elena touched her stomach.

“You know my baby?”

“I know the pattern.”

“What pattern?”

Mercer closed the door.

“Project V was never about making perfect children.”

“Then what?”

“Creating children capable of carrying memories that weren't theirs.”

Marcus stared.

“That's impossible.”

Mercer looked at him.

“Your family spent forty years trying to prove otherwise.”

Elena whispered:

“Isabella.”

Mercer nodded.

“She was the breakthrough.”

“Why?”

“Because she remembered things she had never experienced.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“What things?”

Mercer looked at Elena.

“Your memories.”

Elena went completely still.

“My memories?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“We don't know.”

Mercer pointed toward the old equipment.

“Your pregnancy altered the neural development of both children.”

“Alexander?”

“Partial retention.”

“Isabella?”

“Complete retention.”

“And my unborn child?”

Mercer hesitated.

“Your third child appears to be doing something neither of them did.”

“What?”

“Connecting them.”

Marcus frowned.

“Connecting?”

“Your unborn child's brain activity is responding to the neural patterns of both siblings.”

Elena looked terrified.

“Can that hurt the baby?”

Mercer didn't answer.

Marcus grabbed his collar.

“Can it?”

“No.”

Marcus released him.

“Then what?”

Mercer whispered:

“It can hurt Elena.”

A monitor suddenly beeped.

Mercer turned.

“What is that?”

Daniel entered.

“Someone breached the outer gate.”

Marcus reached for his weapon.

“How many?”

“Six.”

Victoria looked at Mercer.

“They found us.”

Marcus stared.

“Who?”

Victoria answered:

“Blackwell security.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“What?”

“They're not wearing Blackwell uniforms.”

Mercer went pale.

“Then they're here for Elena.”

The first bullet shattered the window.

Everyone dropped.

Marcus pulled Elena behind a concrete wall.

Daniel returned fire.

Victoria grabbed a weapon from one of the guards.

Marcus stared.

“You know how to shoot.”

Victoria didn't look at him.

“I've had practice.”

Another explosion.

The building shook.

Mercer shouted:

“Basement!”

They ran.

The children were brought downstairs.

Alexander held Isabella's hand.

“Don't be afraid,” he whispered.

Isabella looked at him.

“They're coming for Mommy.”

Alexander nodded.

“I know.”

The basement contained dozens of old files.

Marcus looked around.

“Where's the exit?”

Mercer pointed.

“Behind the archive.”

Daniel moved the cabinet.

A hidden passage appeared.

They entered.

The tunnel stretched beneath the building.

Then Elena stopped.

“Wait.”

Marcus turned.

“What?”

She looked behind them.

“I hear someone.”

“No one is there.”

“Yes.”

She listened.

A child's voice.

“Mommy.”

Elena's eyes widened.

“Isabella?”

The little girl stepped forward.

“Mommy, she's calling you.”

“Who?”

Isabella pointed toward the wall.

Elena touched it.

A faint vibration came through.

A recording.

Then a woman's voice.

Elena's mother.

“She's awake.”

Elena gasped.

The wall opened.

Behind it was a hidden chamber.

Inside stood an old chair.

And beside it—

a crib.

Empty.

Elena began crying.

“This is where they kept her.”

Mercer nodded.

“For seven months.”

“Seven months?”

“Yes.”

Marcus stared at him.

“You told us she was transferred.”

“She was.”

“Where?”

Mercer looked away.

“To another family.”

Elena turned.

“What family?”

Mercer whispered:

“The Morettis.”

Marcus froze.

“What?”

“Your father arranged an adoption.”

“Under what name?”

Mercer looked at Isabella.

“Isabella Moretti.”

The girl stared at him.

“I've always been Isabella.”

Mercer shook his head.

“No.”

The room fell silent.

“You were born Elena's daughter.”

Isabella's face changed.

“My name was supposed to be…”

Mercer stopped.

“Lucia.”

Elena dropped to her knees.

“Lucia.”

The little girl stared at her.

“That was my name?”

“Yes.”

“Why did they change it?”

Elena couldn't answer.

Mercer did.

“Because the family needed you to disappear.”

Isabella's eyes filled with tears.

“Why?”

“Because you remembered too much.”

Suddenly the lights went out.

A man's voice echoed through the tunnel.

“Enough.”

Anthony.

Marcus spun.

His father stood at the entrance.

But this time he wasn't alone.

Beside him stood Clara.

And behind them—

Dr. Hayes.

Marcus raised his weapon.

“You.”

Hayes looked at Elena.

“I'm sorry.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.”

Anthony stepped forward.

“You've caused enough damage.”

Marcus stared at him.

“You kidnapped my children.”

Anthony shook his head.

“I protected them.”

“You stole them.”

“I saved them from Project V.”

“You ARE Project V!”

Anthony's face hardened.

“No.”

He looked at Clara.

“She is.”

Clara smiled.

“Finally.”

Clara stepped into the chamber.

“You still believe this is about power.”

Marcus aimed at her.

“Don't come closer.”

She ignored him.

“Your grandfather began the research.”

Anthony interrupted:

“And I ended it.”

Marcus looked at him.

“You're lying.”

Anthony shook his head.

“I destroyed the original facility.”

Clara laughed.

“You tried.”

Anthony looked at her.

“I stopped you.”

“You stopped nothing.”

She pointed toward Elena.

“She is proof.”

Elena stared.

“Proof of what?”

Clara smiled.

“That memory isn't stored only in the brain.”

She touched the side of her head.

“It can be inherited.”

Marcus shook his head.

“You've lost your mind.”

“No.”

Clara looked toward Isabella.

“She remembers Elena's memories.”

Then Alexander.

“He remembers fear.”

Then Elena's stomach.

“And the third child remembers both.”

Marcus looked at Elena.

“That's why you want her.”

Clara nodded.

“Yes.”

“What will you do?”

“Study her.”

“No.”

Clara smiled.

“You misunderstand.”

She pointed toward Elena.

“We don't need to hurt her.”

Marcus lowered his gun slightly.

“Then what?”

Clara's voice became almost gentle.

“We need her to give birth.”

Elena's blood ran cold.

“And after?”

Clara smiled.

“We take the baby.”

Victoria suddenly raised her weapon.

She pointed it at Clara.

“Enough.”

Everyone froze.

Clara looked at her.

“You wouldn't.”

Victoria's hand shook.

“I should have done this twenty years ago.”

Anthony stared.

“Victoria.”

She didn't look at him.

“I spent half my life cleaning up your family's crimes.”

Marcus looked at her.

“What are you doing?”

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

“Ending them.”

She fired.

The bullet struck Clara in the shoulder.

Chaos erupted.

Daniel grabbed the children.

Marcus pulled Elena away.

Anthony tackled Victoria.

Hayes ran.

Mercer screamed.

The facility alarms activated.

Then—

A massive explosion shook the building.

The ceiling cracked.

Marcus grabbed Elena.

“Run!”

They rushed toward the tunnel.

Victoria struggled beneath Anthony.

“Go!”

Marcus stopped.

“Victoria!”

“GO!”

Another explosion.

The ceiling collapsed between them.

Marcus stared in horror.

“Mother!”

Victoria disappeared beneath the rubble.

Elena grabbed his arm.

“Marcus!”

He was forced to run.

They emerged onto the street.

Snow fell heavily.

The building behind them burned.

Marcus turned.

Victoria was gone.

Anthony was gone.

Clara was gone.

Hayes was gone.

Only Daniel, Mercer, Natalie, Elena, and the children remained.

Marcus fell to his knees.

He had lost another piece of his family.

Elena knelt beside him.

“She saved us.”

Marcus nodded.

“She did.”

Then Daniel shouted:

“Marcus!”

He turned.

Daniel held something.

A small black drive.

“We found this in the chamber.”

“What is it?”

“Clara's personal archive.”

Marcus took it.

A single file was open.

SUBJECT E-03

He clicked.

A video appeared.

Clara sat before the camera.

Her face was calm.

“If you're watching this, Elena is already pregnant.”

Marcus stared.

Clara continued:

“The third child is the first true carrier.”

Elena whispered:

“Carrier of what?”

The recording answered.

“Every memory.”

The screen changed.

A scan of Elena's unborn baby.

Then something appeared beside the fetal brain activity.

A second neural pattern.

Marcus stared.

“What's that?”

Mercer stepped closer.

His face turned white.

“That isn't the baby's.”

“Then whose is it?”

Mercer whispered:

“Isabella's.”

Elena looked at her daughter.

The little girl suddenly began crying.

“I can hear her.”

Marcus turned.

“Who?”

Isabella pointed at Elena's stomach.

“Her.”

Elena froze.

“The baby?”

Isabella shook her head.

“No.”

She looked terrified.

“Someone inside the baby.”

Everyone went silent.

Then Elena felt a violent movement beneath her ribs.

One kick.

Then another.

Her face went white.

And a voice—faint, impossible, but unmistakably human—seemed to whisper from inside her:

Mommy.

Elena screamed.

Marcus grabbed her.

The monitor in Mercer's hands suddenly displayed a new reading.

THREE NEURAL SIGNATURES DETECTED.

Mercer stared.

“No…”

Marcus looked at him.

“What?”

Mercer couldn't speak.

Daniel demanded:

“Tell us.”

Mercer finally whispered:

“There aren't two children connected to Elena.”

He looked at the screen.

“There are three.”

The monitor went black.

Then one final message appeared:

THE THIRD MEMORY HAS AWAKENED.
