Chapter 10 - The Truth Behind My Father’s Last Days

The next morning, Evelyn called.

She didn’t say hello.

She didn’t waste time.

“Connor, you need to come to the workshop.”

Something in her voice made me immediately sit up.

“What happened?”

“I found something.”

“What?”

“A recording.”

My heart stopped.

“A recording of what?”

“Your father.”

I looked at Amy.

She immediately knew something serious had happened.

“When?”

“Near the end of his life.”

“Where did you find it?”

“Inside the safe compartment.”

The same place where my father had hidden the documents.

The same place Teresa never knew existed.

An hour later, we were back at the workshop.

Evelyn placed a small old audio device on the table.

“It was hidden behind the documents.”

Aaron looked surprised.

“Your father was preparing for this.”

Evelyn nodded.

“He always prepared.”

I pressed the play button.

Static filled the room.

Then…

My father’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably him.

“If Connor is hearing this…”

I stopped breathing.

“…then I was right to prepare.”

My eyes burned.

I had not heard his voice in fifteen years.

Not a memory.

Not a recording.

His actual voice.

Amy held my hand.

The recording continued.

“Teresa will say she did everything for the family.”

“She will believe that.”

“But intention does not erase damage.”

I closed my eyes.

My father knew.

“She has always feared losing control.”

“She believes if she controls everything, nothing can hurt her.”

“But control is not love.”

“Control is fear wearing a different face.”

Nobody spoke.

Then my father said something that made my blood run cold.

“I discovered Teresa was planning to move assets before my death.”

My eyes opened.

“What?”

The recording continued.

“I confronted her.”

“She denied everything.”

“But I saw the documents.”

“I saw the accounts.”

“I saw the signatures.”

My breathing became heavier.

“She promised she would stop.”

“I wanted to believe her.”

A pause.

Then:

“I was wrong.”

The room felt frozen.

My father’s voice became softer.

“Connor, if you are hearing this, I need you to understand something.”

“Your mother’s actions are not your responsibility.”

“You cannot spend your life repairing damage created by someone who refuses to admit they caused it.”

I looked at Amy.

Tears were running down her face.

Then came the final sentence.

“Protect the family you build.”

“Not the family that destroys it.”

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

For fifteen years, I had carried guilt about my father’s death.

About not being there enough.

About not understanding.

About not asking more questions.

But now I understood.

He had known.

He had tried.

And Teresa had buried the truth.

Aaron finally spoke.

“This changes everything.”

“How?”

“Because this proves knowledge.”

“Intent.”

“Your mother knew what she was doing.”

I looked at Evelyn.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“Because your father made me promise.”

“He said you needed to discover the truth when you were strong enough.”

I looked down.

Was I strong enough?

I didn’t know.

But I knew one thing.

I was no longer confused.

That evening, Teresa made another move.

She released a public statement.

A carefully written apology.

But it wasn’t really an apology.

It was a performance.

She claimed:

She was misunderstood.

She acted out of love.

She wanted only to protect her grandson.

Then came the final sentence.

“I hope my son remembers that family should always come first.”

I stared at the screen.

Then I deleted it.

Because I finally understood something.

Family does come first.

But family is not defined by blood.

It is defined by loyalty.

By protection.

By love.

And Teresa had chosen control over all three.

The next morning, Aaron received a call from the investigator.

The caller had found something hidden inside Bradley Family Holdings.

A second account.

A secret account.

One that had never appeared on official records.

And the person authorized to access it?

Not Teresa.

Not Mason.

Someone else.

Someone I never expected.

Aaron looked at me.

“Connor…”

“What?”

“The account was opened under your name.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

“And there’s more.”

“What?”

“The signature…”

He paused.

“Was yours.”

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.”

“I know.”

“Because you never signed it.”

I felt the room spin.

Someone had created a financial account using my identity.

Someone had forged my name.

And suddenly, I realized…

May you like

Teresa’s plan was much bigger than taking control.

She was trying to make it look like I had already given it away.
