Chapter 3 - The Plan Behind the Party

The birthday decorations were still hanging.

The cake was still on the table.

Frederick’s name was written across the wall.

But the celebration was over.

The house felt like a crime scene.

Police officers photographed documents.

Guests whispered.

Relatives who had laughed earlier suddenly avoided eye contact.

I stood in my living room holding the deed paperwork.

The same home I had spent years building.

The same home where my son took his first steps.

Someone had been trying to take it from me.

My mother.

“Connor.”

Teresa’s voice was softer now.

I looked at her.

Not my mother.

Not the woman who raised me.

The person standing in front of me was someone I didn’t recognize.

“Explain.”

She sighed.

“You’re misunderstanding.”

“No.”

I held up the document.

“You were transferring my house.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“I was protecting your future.”

“My future?”

“Yes.”

She looked at Amy.

“She doesn’t understand finances.”

Amy looked shocked.

My wife had barely spoken.

She was still processing everything.

Teresa continued:

“You work too hard. Someone needs to manage things.”

I stared.

“You mean control things.”

Silence.

The officer stepped closer.

“Mr. Bradley, we found several documents indicating attempts to change ownership records.”

I looked at Mason.

He looked terrified.

“Why?”

Mason swallowed.

“I was just helping.”

“Helping who?”

He didn’t answer.

Teresa did.

“Don’t blame him.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

She always protected the people who helped her.

Never the people she hurt.

The officer opened another folder.

“We also found financial statements.”

My heart tightened.

“What kind?”

“Monthly transfers.”

He looked at me.

“Three thousand dollars.”

I nodded.

“My support payments to my mother.”

The officer shook his head.

“Those funds were not used for household expenses.”

My stomach dropped.

“Then where did they go?”

The officer looked at the paperwork.

“Multiple accounts.”

“Whose?”

He paused.

Then answered:

“Your mother’s.”

The room became silent.

Amy looked at me.

I could see the pain in her eyes.

Not because of the money.

Because she realized how long she had been watching me defend someone who was hurting us.

Teresa stepped forward.

“Connor, listen to me.”

I looked at her.

“You lied to me.”

“I was trying to help.”

“You humiliated my wife.”

“I was teaching her.”

“You tried to take my home.”

“I was protecting the family.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I looked at Amy.

At Frederick.

“This wasn’t about family.”

My voice became steady.

“It was about control.”

For the first time…

my mother had no answer.

The police escorted Teresa and Mason outside while the investigation continued.

Before leaving, Teresa turned around.

Her eyes were cold.

“This isn’t over.”

I believed her.

Because deep down…

I knew the birthday party was only the beginning.

My mother hadn’t just planned to embarrass my wife.

She had spent months building a plan.

A plan to control my money.

My home.

My family.

And she had one thing left.

A secret she thought would destroy me.

But she didn’t know something.

I was done protecting her.

May you like

And now…

I was going to uncover everything.
