Chapter 6: The Secret Hidden in My Blood

The word stared back at me from the document.

PATERNITY INVESTIGATION.

For several seconds, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.

My mind rejected it before my heart even had the chance to react.

A paternity investigation?

About me?

About my family?

About the woman who had raised me?

I looked at Laura Bennett, waiting for her to tell me there was some mistake.

Some misunderstanding.

Some explanation that would make everything normal again.

But she didn't.

She simply looked at me with the sadness of someone who had carried a secret for far too long.

"Maya..."

Her voice was gentle.

"Your grandfather didn't want you to discover this through strangers."

My fingers tightened around the document.

"Then why didn't he tell me?"

Laura looked down.

"Because he was afraid."

"Of what?"

"Of destroying your childhood."

The answer hurt more than I expected.

Because suddenly I realized something.

My grandfather wasn't protecting my mother.

He was protecting me.

I opened the report.

The first page contained a name.

Evelyn Whitaker.

My mother's name.

Below it:

Subject: Possible undisclosed biological relationship involving Maya Elizabeth Whitaker.

My hands began trembling.

"Who is the man in the photograph?"

Laura remained silent for a moment.

"His name was Jonathan Hale."

The name meant nothing.

"Who was he?"

"A businessman."

"Your mother's former colleague."

I looked at her.

"Former?"

Laura nodded.

"Before she married Richard."

My heart raced.

"So what does this mean?"

Laura sat down.

"It means your grandfather suspected your mother was hiding the truth about your biological father."

The room became painfully quiet.

I stared at the pages.

"My father isn't my father?"

Laura didn't answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

The door suddenly opened.

Detective Ramirez stepped inside.

She stopped when she saw Laura.

"You found the file."

Laura nodded.

"Maya deserves to know."

Ramirez looked uncomfortable.

"There's something else you need to understand."

I looked between them.

"What?"

The detective placed another folder on my bed.

"We ran additional searches after discovering the documents."

My stomach tightened.

"What did you find?"

"Jonathan Hale."

She opened the folder.

"He wasn't just your mother's former colleague."

She pointed to a photograph.

"He was the founder of Hale Financial Group."

I stared.

The name sounded familiar.

Everyone in Chicago knew Hale Financial.

A billion-dollar investment company.

"Why would my grandfather investigate him?"

Ramirez answered.

"Because after Jonathan Hale died, his estate records showed something unusual."

"What?"

She turned the page.

"A private trust created twenty years ago."

My breathing slowed.

"Whose trust?"

She looked directly at me.

"Yours."

The room felt like it was spinning.

Another trust.

Another secret.

Another thing my mother had hidden.

"How much?"

Ramirez hesitated.

"Approximately twelve million dollars."

Twelve million.

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

My entire life, I had worried about paying bills.

Saving money.

Making rent.

While somewhere in the background...

There were millions attached to my name.

Millions my mother controlled.

Millions she never told me existed.

"Why?"

My voice cracked.

"Why would she hide this?"

Laura answered quietly.

"Because if the truth became public..."

She looked at the documents.

"She would lose control over everything."

That evening, my father asked to see me.

I almost refused.

Almost.

But I needed answers.

Richard entered slowly.

He looked older than he had yesterday.

Much older.

The man who once seemed powerful now looked like someone carrying the weight of every decision he had ever made.

He stood near the door.

"Can I sit?"

I nodded.

But I didn't invite him closer.

He noticed.

And he deserved to.

"I know what you found."

My expression hardened.

"Did you know?"

A long silence.

Then:

"Yes."

The answer felt like another injury.

Not physical.

Something deeper.

"How long?"

"Since you were twelve."

My eyes burned.

"Twelve?"

He nodded.

"Your grandfather told me."

"And you said nothing?"

Richard looked away.

"I was afraid."

"Everyone keeps saying that."

My voice became sharper.

"Afraid of what?"

"Afraid of losing your mother."

I stared at him.

"And you were willing to lose me?"

His eyes filled.

"No."

"But you did."

The silence was unbearable.

Richard wiped his face.

"I thought I could keep the family together."

"You didn't keep anything together."

"You allowed her to hurt me."

"I know."

"You watched her use me."

"I know."

"You watched her take my money."

"I know."

Every confession sounded like another piece of my childhood being taken away.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

"Is Jonathan Hale my father?"

Richard closed his eyes.

A tear rolled down his cheek.

"I don't know."

That shocked me.

"You don't know?"

"Your grandfather arranged the investigation."

"Your mother found out."

"And she destroyed the original records."

I stared.

"Destroyed?"

Richard nodded.

"But your grandfather kept copies."

I looked at the files.

Everything my mother tried to erase...

Someone had saved.

Two days later, the DNA test was scheduled.

I didn't know what answer I wanted.

Part of me wanted Richard to be my father.

Because even after everything...

A small piece of me still remembered him teaching me how to ride a bike.

Still remembered him making pancakes on Sunday mornings.

Still remembered the man he used to be.

But another part of me wanted the truth.

No matter how painful.

Because lies had already destroyed enough.

The results arrived seven days later.

Detective Ramirez came personally.

She carried a sealed envelope.

Nobody spoke.

Not Laura.

Not Victoria.

Not even me.

I already knew.

This moment would change my life.

Ramirez placed the envelope on the table.

"Maya..."

She paused.

"Are you sure you want to open this?"

I looked at the envelope.

At the name printed across it.

DNA PATERNITY ANALYSIS.

Then I thought about my mother.

The attack.

The lies.

The years of manipulation.

I reached forward.

"Yes."

My fingers opened the seal.

I read the first line.

Then the second.

Then the third.

And everything I thought I knew about my family collapsed.

Probability of biological relationship between Maya Elizabeth Whitaker and Jonathan Hale: 99.99%.

I stopped breathing.

Richard closed his eyes.

Laura looked away.

The truth had finally arrived.

Richard was not my biological father.

Jonathan Hale was.

But then I saw the second page.

The one that made Detective Ramirez's expression change.

The one that explained why my grandfather had hidden everything.

A handwritten note was attached.

Not from the laboratory.

From my grandfather.

Only six words.

Six words that changed the entire case.

"Maya must never inherit alone."

I looked up.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

Then Victoria opened the final document.

A document that had been hidden for twenty years.

A document that revealed why Evelyn Whitaker had spent my entire life controlling me.

Because the truth wasn't just that I was Jonathan Hale's daughter.

The truth was...

May you like

My mother had known it from the beginning.

And she had built an entire life around keeping me from finding out.
