CHAPTER 13 THE BULLET THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The gunshot shattered the basement.

Maya screamed.

Julian moved before she could.

He slammed her against the wall and covered her body with his own.

Another shot.

Then another.

Concrete exploded above them.

Derek fired from the staircase.

Daniel dragged Michael behind an old support beam.

Isabella dropped to the floor.

Victor disappeared into the smoke.

Gabriel remained at the top of the stairs.

"GET THEM!"

Men rushed down.

Julian fired twice.

One man fell.

Another stumbled backward.

Derek shouted:

"Back exit!"

Julian grabbed Maya's hand.

"Move!"

Maya looked toward her mother.

"Mom!"

"Go!"

"I won't leave you!"

Isabella pushed herself upright.

"I'll follow!"

Daniel pulled Isabella toward the tunnel.

"Come on!"

They ran.

The basement filled with smoke.

Maya heard footsteps behind them.

Gabriel shouted:

"Don't let her escape!"

Julian stopped.

He turned.

His eyes became cold.

"No."

He raised his weapon.

The first man appeared.

Julian fired.

The second.

Derek took him down.

The third.

Daniel struck him with the butt of his weapon.

Then silence.

Julian grabbed Maya.

"Now."

They disappeared into the tunnel.

The passage seemed endless.

Maya ran until her lungs burned.

Julian stayed beside her.

Behind them, footsteps echoed.

"They're coming."

Derek looked back.

"How many?"

"Enough."

Michael stumbled.

Daniel caught him.

"You're bleeding."

"I'm fine."

"You're not."

"Keep moving."

Isabella suddenly stopped.

Maya turned.

"Mom?"

Isabella looked at the wall.

"There."

A small metal door.

She opened it.

Inside was a room filled with old boxes.

"Hide."

They crowded inside.

The door closed.

Darkness.

Everyone held their breath.

Footsteps passed outside.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then stopped.

A voice.

Gabriel.

"Come out, Maya."

Silence.

"You know I won't hurt you."

Julian's jaw tightened.

Gabriel continued.

"I only want the drive."

Maya whispered:

"He doesn't know."

Julian looked at her.

"Know what?"

"The drive isn't here."

"What?"

"I copied it."

Julian stared.

"When?"

"At the house."

She pulled a tiny memory card from her pocket.

"I knew someone would come."

Julian almost smiled.

"You're learning."

Maya whispered:

"From you."

The footsteps disappeared.

They waited another five minutes.

Then Daniel opened the door.

"Clear."

They emerged.

Isabella looked at Maya.

"You copied the files?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

Maya touched her phone.

"Cloud storage."

Julian's expression changed.

"Encrypted?"

"Very."

"Who has access?"

"Nobody."

A pause.

"Except me."

Derek looked at Julian.

"Then we have leverage."

Julian nodded.

"For the first time."

They reached an abandoned apartment before sunrise.

Derek secured the doors.

Michael received medical treatment.

Daniel sat against the wall.

Isabella remained beside Maya.

Julian stood at the window.

He looked different.

Not defeated.

But shaken.

Maya approached him.

"You okay?"

"No."

She touched his hand.

"What happened?"

"I spent my entire life believing Victor was my father."

"He is."

"Biologically."

"Yes."

"He lied about everything else."

"Yes."

Julian stared outside.

"And Rafael?"

"My father."

"Yes."

"Your father."

Maya nodded.

"Then we're not related."

"No."

Julian exhaled.

For several seconds neither spoke.

Then Maya whispered:

"Are you afraid?"

"Of what?"

"That everything between us is wrong."

Julian turned.

"No."

"You're sure?"

"I've never been more certain of anything."

He touched her face.

"You are not my family."

Maya's eyes filled.

"You are."

Julian smiled faintly.

"Then maybe that's the only family I need."

He kissed her.

It was brief.

Gentle.

Almost fragile.

Then someone knocked.

Three times.

Everyone froze.

Daniel reached for his weapon.

Derek raised his.

Julian stepped in front of Maya.

"Who is it?"

No answer.

Three more knocks.

Then a voice.

"Rafael."

Maya's heart stopped.

She opened the door.

A man stood in the hallway.

Older.

Gray hair.

Scar across his cheek.

Maya stared.

"No."

The man looked at her.

"Hello, Maya."

She couldn't breathe.

"You're..."

"Alive."

Isabella collapsed into a chair.

Rafael stepped inside.

For several seconds, Maya couldn't move.

Then she ran.

She threw her arms around him.

Rafael held her.

He cried.

So did she.

"I thought you were dead."

"I know."

"I waited."

"I know."

"Why didn't you come?"

"Because I was trying to keep you alive."

She pulled away.

"You watched me."

"Every year."

"Why?"

"Because Gabriel was looking for you."

Maya wiped her tears.

"Mom told me you were killed."

"I almost was."

"By Gabriel?"

"Yes."

Rafael looked at Isabella.

"He tried."

Isabella began crying.

"I'm sorry."

Rafael nodded.

"I know."

Maya looked between them.

"Then why did everyone say you were dead?"

Rafael's face hardened.

"Because Victor and Gabriel needed the world to believe I was gone."

"Why?"

"To hide the ledger."

"The ledger is gone."

"No."

Maya froze.

"The one you found is a copy."

Julian stepped forward.

"Where is the original?"

Rafael looked at him.

"With Victor."

Julian frowned.

"I thought Gabriel had it."

"He does."

"Then—"

Rafael shook his head.

"Gabriel thinks he has it."

A pause.

"He doesn't."

Derek asked:

"Who does?"

Rafael looked at Maya.

"You."

Maya stared.

"What?"

Rafael smiled.

"Your mother carried the original ledger out of the warehouse twenty-three years ago."

Isabella nodded.

"I hid it."

"Where?"

"Somewhere Gabriel would never search."

Maya looked at her.

"Where?"

Isabella pointed toward Maya.

"Inside you."

Maya frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Rafael answered.

"The ledger isn't a book."

He touched the pendant around her neck.

"It's encoded in the necklace."

Maya grabbed the pendant.

"The replacement?"

"No."

Rafael shook his head.

"Your mother gave you the original when you were four."

Maya stared.

"But she said it was replaced."

"She lied."

"Why?"

"Because Gabriel searched for it."

Maya examined the pendant.

"How do I open it?"

Rafael smiled.

"Your mother's birthday."

Maya whispered the date.

Nothing happened.

Rafael shook his head.

"Not hers."

Maya frowned.

"Then whose?"

"Yours."

She entered her birth date.

The pendant clicked.

A tiny compartment opened.

Inside was a microchip.

Julian stared.

"That's the ledger."

Rafael nodded.

"Every name."

"Every payment?"

"Every murder."

"Every politician?"

"Every judge."

"Every officer?"

"Yes."

Maya stared at the tiny chip.

"Why would my mother put it inside my necklace?"

"Because nobody searches a child for evidence."

Julian took the chip.

"We need to get this somewhere secure."

Rafael nodded.

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because Gabriel already knows."

Everyone froze.

"How?"

Rafael looked at Isabella.

"She told him."

Maya turned.

"Mom?"

Isabella began shaking.

"I had to."

"Why?"

"Because he had you."

Maya stared.

"What?"

"Four years ago."

Isabella swallowed.

"Gabriel kidnapped you."

Maya's face went pale.

"No."

"You don't remember."

"Because you erased it?"

"No."

"Then why?"

"Because Daniel found you."

Maya looked toward Daniel.

He lowered his eyes.

"You were nineteen."

"I was."

"Gabriel took you?"

Daniel nodded.

"He wanted to force your mother to surrender the ledger."

Maya looked at Isabella.

"You gave it to him."

"Yes."

"And then?"

"Daniel rescued you."

Maya turned toward Daniel.

"You saved me again."

He nodded.

"Why don't I remember?"

"Because you hit your head."

"Who treated me?"

Daniel looked at Michael.

"He did."

Maya stared.

Michael smiled faintly.

"I was there."

"The bakery?"

"Yes."

"You've been watching me for four years."

"Protecting you."

She stepped closer.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Gabriel had people everywhere."

Rafael suddenly looked toward the window.

"He's here."

Julian turned.

"Who?"

"Gabriel."

Derek checked the street.

"How do you know?"

Rafael smiled.

"Because he wants me to know."

A laser dot appeared on the wall.

Julian shouted:

"DOWN!"

The window exploded.

Everyone dropped.

Rafael pushed Maya to the floor.

Another shot.

Derek fired toward the opposite building.

Daniel dragged Michael behind cover.

Isabella screamed.

"Rafael!"

"I'm fine."

Julian looked outside.

"He's got a sniper."

Rafael shook his head.

"No."

"What?"

"He's not trying to kill us."

Another bullet struck the wall.

Rafael pointed.

"He's trying to scare us."

Julian understood.

"He's forcing us out."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Rafael looked at Maya.

"Because he wants the necklace."

The building alarm began ringing.

People rushed into the hallway.

Julian pulled Maya toward the emergency exit.

Derek covered them.

They descended four floors.

Outside, chaos.

Police sirens.

People screaming.

Cars stopping.

Gabriel had turned the entire block into a trap.

Julian pushed Maya into an armored vehicle.

Everyone piled in.

Derek drove.

Rafael sat beside Maya.

Isabella sat opposite them.

For the first time, father, mother, and daughter were together.

But nobody felt safe.

They drove toward the lake.

Julian looked at Rafael.

"Where are we going?"

"Somewhere Gabriel can't reach."

"That doesn't exist."

"It does."

"Where?"

Rafael looked toward the water.

"The old lighthouse."

Julian frowned.

"The one on the island?"

"Yes."

Derek shook his head.

"It's abandoned."

"Exactly."

The lighthouse stood alone in the freezing lake.

Snow covered the stone.

Waves struck the rocks below.

Inside, they found an old room.

Rafael unlocked a steel cabinet.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Weapons.

And a single envelope.

He handed it to Maya.

"Your father wrote this for you."

Maya stared.

"You?"

Rafael shook his head.

"No."

"Then who?"

"Gabriel."

Her hands trembled.

She opened it.

The letter contained only one sentence.

You were never supposed to survive.

Maya looked up.

Rafael's expression changed.

"That's not the worst part."

"What is?"

"He wrote another letter."

"Where?"

Rafael pointed toward the lighthouse stairs.

"At the top."

Maya climbed.

Julian followed.

At the top was another envelope.

This one was addressed to:

JULIAN CROFT.

He opened it.

Inside:

Your father is not Victor.

Victor only raised you.

Your biological father died before you were born.

His name was Rafael Mendoza.

And the man who ordered his death was not Gabriel.

It was your mother.

Julian stopped breathing.

Maya looked at him.

"Julian?"

He couldn't answer.

Rafael came up the stairs.

His face was pale.

"That's impossible."

Julian handed him the letter.

Rafael read it.

Then looked at Isabella.

"Did you write this?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Rafael looked at Julian.

"I didn't die before you were born."

Julian stared.

"Then it's fake."

"No."

Rafael's face changed.

"It's true."

Maya's eyes widened.

"What?"

Rafael whispered:

"Julian's biological father was someone else."

Julian's voice became cold.

"Who?"

Rafael looked at him.

"Victor."

Julian shook his head.

"You just said—"

"I was wrong."

Rafael stared at the letter.

"Victor wasn't your father."

"Then who?"

Rafael's voice dropped.

"The man whose name was erased from every record."

Julian waited.

"Your real father was..."

A gunshot rang out.

Rafael fell.

Maya screamed.

Julian caught him.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Outside, a helicopter appeared over the lake.

Gabriel's voice came through a loudspeaker.

"Bring me my daughter."

Maya stared toward the sky.

Gabriel continued:

"And bring me the necklace."

The helicopter descended.

Julian held Rafael in his arms.

Rafael whispered:

"Don't give it to him."

Maya looked at him.

"Who is my father?"

Rafael's eyes closed.

Before he could answer, the lighthouse doors exploded inward.

Armed men stormed inside.

And at the front of them stood Gabriel.

He looked directly at Maya.

Then smiled.

"Now, daughter..."

May you like

He raised his gun.

"...we finally talk."
