PART 10 — THE MIDPOINT TRUTH

We thought the building was the motive.

We were wrong.

The building was the deadline.

Laura discovered it two days later.

My father’s property had appreciated dramatically because a development company wanted the entire block.

Daniel knew before I did.

A private buyer had offered $3.4 million.

But the development company was prepared to pay almost twice that amount if all neighboring properties were acquired.

Daniel had been secretly communicating with one of their intermediaries.

If he could sell my building cheaply through a controlled transaction, another company connected to him would receive a substantial consulting payment after the redevelopment deal closed.

It wasn’t just theft.

It was a hidden profit scheme.

“How much?” I asked.

Laura looked at the documents.

“Potentially another one-point-two million.”

Life insurance.

The building.

The consulting money.

Daniel wasn’t planning for one outcome.

He had designed several.

If I recovered and he got guardianship, he controlled the sale.

If I died, he inherited the building and insurance.

If I challenged him, he had months of documentation saying I was confused.

Every road led to him winning.

Rachel sat across from me.

“He built this around your illness.”

I stared at the table.

“No.”

She frowned.

I finally understood something.

“He built it around everyone believing him.”

That was the real weapon.

Not my cancer.

Not my medication.

His credibility.

The concerned husband.

The man who attended appointments.

The man who told nurses I had fallen.

The man who reminded everyone how sick I was.

Daniel had hidden inside the role nobody wanted to question.

Then Laura received a call.

Her face changed as she listened.

“What?”

I waited.

She hung up.

“Daniel’s attorney has filed an emergency motion.”

“For what?”

“To prohibit Rachel from having contact with you.”

Rachel sat upright.

“On what grounds?”

“They’re claiming she has crossed professional boundaries and manipulated a vulnerable patient.”

My stomach dropped.

Daniel was attacking the witness.

Laura continued.

“And his lawyer submitted a complaint against her nursing license.”

Rachel went pale.

“What complaint?”

“That she influenced you into making false abuse allegations.”

I stared at her.

Daniel couldn’t control Rachel.

So he was trying to discredit her exactly the way he had discredited me.

For the first time, Rachel looked afraid.

And I realized Daniel still had one enormous advantage.

He knew how to turn anyone who challenged him into the problem.
