Chapter One:The Boardroom at Sunrise

Marcus Whitmore arrived at Whitmore Grand Hotel Headquarters at 7:43 a.m., twenty-three minutes before the emergency board meeting.

He expected applause.

Instead, he found silence.

The receptionist who usually greeted him with a smile lowered her eyes.

"Good morning, sir."

Her voice sounded rehearsed.

Careful.

Almost afraid.

Marcus frowned.

"Where's everyone?"

"They're already upstairs."

He glanced toward the executive elevators.

Odd.

No assistant waiting.

No legal team.

No coffee.

No one rushing to hand him a briefing folder.

The doors opened.

He stepped inside.

For the first time in years, the ride to the executive floor felt unusually long.

Inside the boardroom, twelve directors sat around the polished walnut table.

No one spoke.

The company's outside counsel stood beside the projector.

Three unfamiliar attorneys occupied the far end of the room.

Marcus recognized the law firm's name immediately.

Sinclair & Ashford.

One of the oldest private trust firms in the country.

He had never hired them.

"So," Marcus said confidently, loosening his tie, "what's so urgent that everyone had to be here before eight?"

Nobody answered.

Then the doors opened again.

Amelia walked inside.

She wore a charcoal-gray suit.

Simple.

Elegant.

No jewelry except the sapphire brooch that had belonged to her mother.

The same brooch Vanessa had proudly worn the night before.

Marcus stared.

"How did you get that back?"

Amelia ignored the question.

She walked past him without slowing.

Every eye in the room followed her.

One by one...

The directors stood.

Marcus blinked.

Why were they standing?

Amelia reached the chair at the head of the table.

Not Marcus's chair.

Her chair.

The chairman of the board inclined his head.

"Good morning, Ms. Sinclair."

Every director echoed the greeting.

"Good morning, Ms. Sinclair."

Marcus laughed.

"What exactly is this supposed to be?"

No one laughed with him.

The company's lead attorney activated the projector.

A single document appeared on the screen.

THE SINCLAIR FAMILY TRUST

Marcus frowned.

"I've never seen this."

"No," Amelia replied calmly.

"You weren't supposed to."

The attorney adjusted his glasses.

"At 10:14 p.m. yesterday evening, Article Nine of the Sinclair Trust was lawfully activated."

Another page appeared.

Corporate ownership charts.

Holding companies.

Investment entities.

Marcus watched the percentages change.

Hotel after hotel.

Real estate.

Private equity.

Luxury resorts.

Everything connected.

Everything flowing upward.

Until every branch ended at one name.

AMELIA ELIZABETH SINCLAIR

"No."

Marcus shook his head.

"That's impossible."

"It isn't," the attorney answered.

"The restructuring ten years ago transferred operational authority to you."

He clicked again.

"But beneficial ownership remained with the Sinclair Trust."

Marcus turned toward Amelia.

"You lied to me."

"I protected my father's wishes."

"You let me believe I built this company."

"You helped build it."

Her voice never rose.

"But you never owned it."

Marcus slammed both hands onto the table.

"I am CEO."

"You were."

The chairman slid a sealed envelope across the polished wood.

Marcus opened it.

Termination of Executive Authority.

Effective immediately.

Signed.

Witnessed.

Notarized.

He looked around desperately.

"This is illegal."

"It was reviewed by three independent courts before the trust was ever created," one attorney replied.

"You have no grounds to challenge it."

Marcus stared at Amelia.

"You planned this."

"No."

She met his eyes.

"You planned it."

At that exact moment, the conference room doors opened once more.

Vanessa entered wearing oversized sunglasses.

She smiled until she noticed the room.

The lawyers.

The directors.

The silence.

She looked at Marcus.

"Baby?"

No one moved.

No one offered her a chair.

Amelia folded her hands.

"Miss Carter."

Vanessa swallowed.

"I believe you're wearing company property."

She looked down.

The silk robe.

The sapphire earrings.

The designer handbag purchased with a corporate expense account.

An investigator stepped forward.

"We'll need those returned."

Vanessa's confidence evaporated.

Marcus finally understood.

The celebration had lasted exactly one night.

The consequences...

Would last much longer.
