CHAPTER 3 — THE MAN WHO OWNED THE GROUND BENEATH HIS FEET

CHAPTER 3 — THE MAN WHO OWNED THE GROUND BENEATH HIS FEET

At exactly 11:43 p.m., six black SUVs stopped outside the mansion.

Security guards rushed toward the gate.

Before they could ask questions, every phone they carried vibrated simultaneously.

A new ownership order.

Effective immediately.

The estate no longer belonged to Adrian Blackwood.

The gates opened automatically.

Richard Sterling stepped out first.

Even at sixty-three, he carried himself like a king entering land that had always been his.

Behind him came lawyers.

Executives.

Private security.

Government officials responsible for registering emergency property transfers.

No one raised their voice.

No one needed to.

Power never shouted.

The head butler hurried outside.

He had served the mansion for twenty-five years.

The moment he saw Richard, he bowed deeply.

"Welcome home, Mr. Sterling."

Adrian froze.

"You... know him?"

The butler looked almost offended.

"Sir, this estate has belonged to the Sterling family for forty-two years."

Vanessa stared in disbelief.

"What?"

Richard walked slowly toward Adrian.

"You must be Adrian."

Adrian tried to regain control.

"There has to be some misunderstanding."

"There isn't."

Richard handed a folder to his attorney.

Every page contained signatures.

Corporate seals.

Ownership certificates.

Loan agreements.

Trust documents.

"The mansion was leased to Blackwood Enterprises through a renewable family agreement."

Richard spoke calmly.

"The agreement contained one condition."

Adrian swallowed.

"What condition?"

"If my daughter was ever abused, abandoned, or removed from this home..."

Richard paused.

"...the lease would immediately terminate."

Adrian looked as though the ground had disappeared beneath him.

"You planned this?"

"No."

Richard's voice hardened.

"I prayed I would never need it."

Vanessa suddenly ripped the necklace from her neck.

"I don't want this anymore!"

She threw it onto the marble floor.

Richard ignored her completely.

He picked up the blue diamond pendant.

Walked toward me.

And gently fastened it around my neck.

"It belongs where your mother wanted it."

For the first time all night...

I cried.

Not because I had lost my husband.

But because I had finally come home.

Security officers stepped forward.

One handed Adrian an official notice.

"You have thirty minutes to vacate the premises."

May you like

"You can't do this!"

"I already have."
