CHAPTER 2 — The First Crack

CHAPTER 2 — The First Crack

The rain had barely stopped when the first call reached Adrian.

He glanced at his phone, annoyed.

"Not now."

His chief financial officer rarely called after business hours unless something had gone terribly wrong.

Adrian answered anyway.

"What is it?"

The voice on the other end was shaking.

"Sir... we've lost access to the corporate accounts."

Adrian frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

"I mean all of them. The operating accounts, investment portfolios, credit facilities... they're locked."

"Impossible."

"We've contacted every bank. They all said the ownership authorization has been revoked."

Adrian laughed.

"By who?"

A long silence followed.

Finally the CFO whispered,

"By the original majority owner."

Adrian's smile disappeared.

"There is no majority owner except me."

"That's what we thought."

Vanessa watched his face pale.

"What's happening?"

He covered the phone.

"Nothing."

But another call arrived before he could hang up.

Then another.

His legal director.

His accountant.

His investment manager.

Each one delivered another piece of the same nightmare.

Contracts suspended.

Credit lines frozen.

Supplier payments rejected.

Company access revoked.

It made no sense.

He owned Harrington Global.

Didn't he?

He stormed into his office and pulled the incorporation documents from the safe.

His name appeared as CEO.

Managing Director.

Public face of the company.

But buried inside hundreds of pages was one paragraph he had never bothered to read.

The Harrington Family Trust retained controlling ownership under all circumstances.

The signature beneath it belonged to one man.

Richard Harrington.

Claire's father.

Across the city...

Richard calmly closed the file in front of him.

Around the conference table sat twelve executives.

No one spoke until he did.

"For ten years..."

His voice remained steady.

"My daughter asked me not to interfere."

Every executive lowered their eyes.

"I honored her decision."

He looked toward the large window overlooking the skyline.

"Tonight..."

"...that promise ends."

He nodded once.

"Begin Phase One."

Phones lit up across the room.

Orders spread through banks...

Law firms...

Government registries...

Investment groups...

Within minutes, thousands of employees around the world received new executive directives.

Not one order came from Adrian.

Every order carried one signature.

Richard Harrington.

Back at the mansion...

Adrian attempted to transfer money into another account.

Transaction denied.

He tried another bank.

Denied.

Another.

Denied.

Vanessa frowned.

"Use another card."

He handed her his platinum credit card.

She walked confidently toward the driver waiting outside.

Five minutes later she returned.

"They declined it."

He handed her another.

Then another.

Every single one failed.

Her smile slowly vanished.

"What kind of joke is this?"

"It's temporary."

He no longer sounded convinced.

A servant hurried inside.

"Sir..."

"What now?"

"There are security officers at the gate."

"Tell them to leave."

"They said..."

The servant swallowed nervously.

"They're not here for Mrs. Claire."

"They're here for you."

Miles away...

Claire sat quietly beside the fireplace in her father's estate.

A blanket covered her shoulders.

Her childhood home hadn't changed.

The scent of cedar wood.

The old piano.

The family photographs.

Everything felt exactly as it had before she met Adrian.

Richard entered carrying two cups of tea.

"You should rest."

She looked into the fire.

"I kept believing he'd become the man I married."

Richard placed a hand gently over hers.

"No."

"You kept hoping."

She nodded.

"I thought if I loved him enough..."

"He'd stop wanting more."

Her father smiled sadly.

"Greed has no finish line."

For the first time in years...

Claire cried.

Not because she had lost her marriage.

Because she finally accepted it had been gone long before tonight.

Outside...

The storm had ended.

May you like

But somewhere across the city...

Another one had just begun.
