Chapter 18 - ADRIAN’S SENTENCE

Adrian received eleven years.

Less than Celeste wanted for enemies.

More than he believed possible for himself.

He stood at sentencing.

Apologized to employees.

Investors.

Daniel.

Mateo.

Clara.

Me.

I listened.

Some of it sounded sincere.

Sincerity after consequences still counts.

It just doesn't erase them.

Daniel spoke.

He described the moment he saw Mateo's empty car seat.

No theatrics.

That was worse.

“My son learned that adults with money can make children disappear to control their parents.”

Adrian cried.

Daniel did not.

Then Clara spoke.

I had not wanted her to.

I almost stopped her.

Then remembered Adrian's warning.

Don't become your father.

So I let her choose.

She stood.

“My dad taught me to ride a bike.”

Adrian looked up.

“He came to every school play until I was twelve. He sat beside my incubator when I was born.”

Her voice shook.

“I need the court to know that because bad things don't become less bad just because the person also did good things.”

Silence.

“He also put money in my name without telling me. Tried to control my trust. Helped create fake records about my mother.”

She looked at him.

“I love my dad.”

Adrian's face crumpled.

“And I don't trust him.”

There it was.

The sentence our entire story had been moving toward.

Love and trust were not synonyms.

The judge imposed eleven years.

Afterward Clara collapsed into my arms.

“Was that horrible?”

“No.”

“Did I hurt him?”

“Yes.”

She cried.

I held her.

“You can tell the truth and still be sad it hurts someone.”

That lesson would matter longer than money.

Adrian wrote from prison six months later.

I didn't answer.

Clara did.

Slowly.

With boundaries.

Her choice.

I never asked what they discussed.

That was growth for me.
