Chapter 4 – Secrets Buried for Four Years

Rain streaked across the floor-to-ceiling windows of Escalante Global as evening settled over the city.
The celebration following the board vote had ended hours earlier.
Most of the executives had gone home.
Only one conference room remained illuminated.
Mariana sat alone at the end of a long table, surrounded by stacks of financial reports, employee files, and digital evidence gathered during the day's investigation.
She wasn't interested in humiliating Andrew.
She wanted the truth.
Every piece of it.
A soft knock broke the silence.
Eleanor Hayes stepped inside carrying a silver evidence case.
"Our investigators found something you should see."
Mariana closed the folder in front of her.
"What is it?"
Eleanor placed a flash drive on the table.
"We recovered archived surveillance footage from Hawthorne Manor."
Mariana frowned.
"I thought the recordings were automatically deleted after ninety days."
"They were."
Eleanor allowed herself a faint smile.
"But someone forgot about the backup server."
She connected the drive to the conference room monitor.
The screen flickered to life.
A timestamp appeared.
Four Years Earlier.
Mariana's heartbeat slowed.
That was the night everything had changed.
The night Margaret's treasured emerald necklace had disappeared.
The accusation had spread through the family within hours.
Mariana had denied stealing it.
No one believed her.
The footage began playing.
The grand hallway outside Margaret's private suite appeared on the screen.
House staff moved back and forth preparing for the annual charity gala.
Nothing unusual.
Then Eleanor paused the video.
"Watch the left side."
The footage resumed.
A woman entered the hallway carrying a tray of champagne glasses.
She wasn't a guest.
She wasn't security.
She was Margaret's longtime personal assistant.
Diane Collins.
Mariana leaned forward.
"Diane?"
For nearly twenty years, Diane had been Margaret's most trusted employee.
She managed the jewelry collection, household staff, and private appointments.
Margaret had often called her "part of the family."
The video showed Diane unlocking Margaret's private jewelry room.
She looked over both shoulders.
Then disappeared inside.
Exactly three minutes later...
She emerged carrying a small velvet jewelry box.
Empty.
Instead of reporting the missing necklace...
She quietly slipped the box into a housekeeping cart.
Mariana's expression hardened.
"Where was the necklace?"
Eleanor clicked another file.
"A different camera."
The screen changed to footage from a service corridor rarely used by guests.
Seconds later, another woman entered.
Brenda.
She wasn't wearing the elegant gown she had appeared in later that evening.
Instead, she wore casual clothing and a baseball cap.
She accepted a small velvet pouch from Diane.
The exchange lasted less than ten seconds.
No words.
No hesitation.
Brenda tucked the pouch into her handbag and walked away.
The timestamp confirmed it.
The necklace had vanished nearly two hours before anyone claimed it had been stolen.
Neither woman noticed the hidden security camera.
Mariana slowly exhaled.
"So it was planned."
Eleanor nodded.
"We believe so."
Another investigator entered carrying a second folder.
"There's more."
He placed several bank statements beside Mariana.
"We traced Diane Collins' financial records."
Mariana opened the file.
Her eyes narrowed.
Three months after the necklace disappeared...
A newly created consulting company deposited $850,000 into Diane's personal account.
The company had no employees.
No office.
No clients.
Only one outgoing transfer.
The money originated from an account registered to Carter Lifestyle Consulting LLC.
Brenda Carter.
Mariana looked up.
"You're certain?"
The investigator nodded.
"We confirmed it through bank subpoenas."
Another page revealed luxury purchases Diane had made shortly afterward.
A waterfront condominium.
A sports car.
Expensive vacations she could never have afforded on her salary.
Mariana closed the folder.
"So Brenda paid her."
"Yes."
"But we still don't know why."
Eleanor reached into the evidence case one last time.
She removed a handwritten notebook recovered from Diane's home office during a lawful search.
Inside were years of appointment reminders.
Household inventories.
Private instructions from Margaret.
Near the center of the notebook, one page had been torn halfway out.
The remaining words were barely visible.
"...after tonight everyone will finally believe she's after the family jewels..."
Mariana stared at the faded ink.
The sentence wasn't complete.
But it was enough.
Someone had wanted suspicion to fall on her before the necklace was ever reported missing.
An hour later, Diane Collins sat inside an interview room with two investigators.
She looked exhausted.
Older than Mariana remembered.
A recorder clicked on.
"Ms. Collins," one investigator began, "we've reviewed the security footage."
Diane lowered her head.
No denial.
No outrage.
Only silence.
"You can help yourself by telling the truth."
Several long moments passed.
Finally, Diane whispered,
"I never meant for it to go this far."
Mariana watched through the observation window.
She stepped inside the room.
Diane looked up, tears filling her eyes.
"I'm sorry."
Mariana remained calm.
"Why?"
Diane's shoulders trembled.
"Mrs. Hawthorne trusted me."
"I spent my whole life serving that family."
"Then Brenda came."
"What did she offer you?"
"Freedom."
Diane closed her eyes.
"She promised enough money for me to retire."
"She said no one would get hurt."
"She only wanted you out of Andrew's life."
Mariana said nothing.
Diane continued.
"The necklace was hidden."
"Not sold."
"She planned to return it after you left."
"So everyone would believe you confessed."
Mariana felt a strange sense of relief.
Not triumph.
Relief.
For four years, she had carried the weight of an accusation she could never disprove.
Now the truth finally had a voice.
Before leaving, Mariana asked one final question.
"Did Margaret know?"
Diane hesitated.
Then answered carefully.
"I don't know if she knew the entire plan."
"But..."
Mariana waited.
"During the investigation..."
"She told me..."
"'As long as Mariana leaves this family, I don't care how it happens.'"
The room fell silent.
Mariana walked toward the window overlooking the city.
Below, thousands of lights stretched into the darkness.
The necklace had never been the real target.
She had been.
The emerald was only a weapon.
Someone had stolen far more than a priceless jewel.
They had stolen four years of trust.
Four years of dignity.
Four years of her life.
Behind her, Eleanor quietly closed the evidence file.
"Should we release this to the authorities?"
Mariana looked out over the skyline.
Her reflection stared back from the glass.
"Not yet."
Eleanor looked surprised.
Mariana turned with quiet determination.
"Brenda thinks the necklace is the biggest secret she's hiding."
A faint smile crossed her face.
"She has no idea we've only uncovered the first layer."
Outside, thunder rolled across the city.

Some storms ended with rain.
Others revealed everything buried beneath the surface.
