Chapter 9 – The Video Everyone Watches
The courtroom was unusually quiet when Judge Eleanor Matthews entered the following morning.
No whispered conversations.
No rustling papers.
Even the reporters waiting outside the closed courtroom sensed that something significant was about to happen.
On the clerk's desk rested a sealed evidence case bearing the logo of St. Andrew's Medical Center.
Inside was the hospital surveillance recording.
For the first time since the custody proceedings had begun, there would be no conflicting memories.

Judge Matthews adjusted her glasses and looked toward both legal teams.

The timestamp appeared in the upper-right corner.

The camera overlooked the maternity entrance from above.
There was no sound.

The video began with hospital staff wheeling Hailey toward the exit.
She insisted on standing before reaching the curb.
The nurse carefully handed her Toby.
Hailey smiled weakly at her newborn.

And placed them in her hand.

The diaper bag was tossed casually into the vehicle.

Holding a five-day-old newborn.

The elderly driver lowered the entrance platform.
Hailey slowly climbed aboard, one painful step at a time.
She paused halfway up the stairs.

Then she disappeared inside.
The screen faded to black.

She looked toward Hailey's attorney.

A woman in her early fifties approached the witness stand.
She was the Chief of Obstetrics at St. Andrew's Medical Center.
After taking the oath, she folded her hands calmly.
Victoria began.
"Doctor, how many Cesarean deliveries have you supervised during your career?"
"More than four thousand."
"Can you explain what a patient typically experiences five days after surgery?"
Dr. Carter nodded.
"A Cesarean section is major abdominal surgery."
"The patient has multiple layers of tissue and muscle healing simultaneously."
"Pain is expected."
"Standing for prolonged periods is difficult."
"Carrying additional weight increases discomfort."
Victoria continued.
"In your professional opinion..."
"Would carrying a newborn while boarding public transportation be medically recommended?"
"No."
"Why?"
"It unnecessarily increases the risk of falls, wound complications, bleeding, and delayed healing."
The doctor paused before adding,
"Whenever possible, another adult should assist."
Richard Hayes stood for cross-examination.
"Doctor..."
"Is every patient identical?"
"No."
"Some women recover more quickly?"
"Certainly."
"So traveling home is not automatically dangerous."
Dr. Carter looked directly at him.
"Traveling with appropriate support is one thing."
"Being left alone after surgery is another."
Several people in the courtroom shifted uncomfortably.
The next witness was Dr. Michael Lang, the surgeon who had performed Hailey's emergency Cesarean section.
He reviewed her medical records.
"There were no unusual complications."
"However..."
He looked toward the judge.
"Mrs. Collins lost a significant amount of blood during delivery."
"The discharge instructions specifically recommended assistance with transportation and infant care."
Victoria displayed the signed discharge form.
At the bottom...
Jasper's own signature confirmed he had received those instructions.
The courtroom grew even quieter.
Richard attempted another defense.
"My client believed his wife was capable."
Dr. Lang answered without hesitation.
"Medical recovery is not determined by belief."
"It is determined by physiology."
When the testimony concluded, Judge Matthews requested a short recess.
Outside the courtroom, reporters crowded the hallway, hoping for any information.
Although cameras had not been permitted inside, attorneys, witnesses, and court staff carried expressions that told the story without words.

The engineering floor, usually filled with conversation, became eerily quiet.
One software developer closed his laptop.
"I have a daughter."

Both cited "personal reasons."
Inside the company, everyone understood what those words really meant.

Jasper remained seated in the courtroom after the recess ended.

He remembered believing he was simply saving time.

"This case is not about punishing a father."
"It is about protecting a child."
She looked briefly toward Jasper.
"Parents make mistakes."
"But the most dangerous mistakes are those a person refuses to recognize."
Richard Hayes stood next.
"My client has acknowledged his failures."
"He wishes to rebuild trust."
"He loves his son."
"And he asks this Court for the opportunity to prove he can become the father Toby deserves."
For the first time in the proceedings...
His argument sounded less like a legal strategy...
And more like hope.
Judge Matthews listened without interruption.
When both attorneys had finished, she closed the case file and folded her hands.

"We have heard from medical professionals."

She paused.
Every person in the courtroom waited.
Jasper's breathing became shallow.
Hailey instinctively held Toby a little closer.
The judge looked at both parents.

She slowly closed the file.

She struck the gavel once.

The sound echoed through the silent courtroom.

Not Hailey.
