Chapter 6 - THEIR BEACH HOUSE

Ethan and Patricia had been buying a beach condominium together.

With money secured by my forged signature.

For years Patricia had called me selfish whenever I questioned household expenses.

Meanwhile, she and her son were quietly converting my income into property for themselves.

The Acapulco deposit was 720,000 pesos.

Furniture orders added another 180,000.

Designer lighting.

Imported tile.

Custom cabinetry.

A rooftop membership fee.

Every transaction told the same story.

They had never thought of my money as mine.

They had thought of it as family property.

Their family.

Not Sophie’s.

Not mine.

Theirs.

Rebecca filed notice disputing the guarantee.

Marcus contacted the lender’s fraud department.

Suddenly Ethan had problems bigger than frozen credit cards.

He still didn’t know we had found the condominium.

So we waited.

For once, patience felt better than confrontation.

At the temporary custody hearing three days later, Ethan entered wearing a dark suit I had bought him for our anniversary.

Patricia wore cream.

Chloe sat behind them.

Robert was absent.

Ethan looked at me across the courtroom.

Then at Sophie, who waited elsewhere with a court-approved caregiver.

He smiled sadly.

It was the expression of a man trying to convince strangers he had been abandoned.

His attorney spoke first.

“Elena Mercer is a successful executive whose career requires extensive travel.”

No one disputed that.

“She has historically delegated much of the child’s care to paternal grandmother Patricia Mercer.”

They submitted photographs.

Patricia pushing Sophie in a stroller.

Patricia at a birthday.

Patricia at preschool.

It looked persuasive.

Then they submitted the fabricated messages.

No treats tonight.

She needs discipline.

Don’t let her manipulate you.

My stomach turned even though I knew they were fake.

Then Rebecca stood.

She did not attack.

She asked for the building footage.

The grocery delivery.

Sophie reaching toward food.

Patricia pushing her hand away.

Ethan arriving.

Sophie disappearing.

Me leaving with her.

Next came Dr. Ortiz’s statement documenting recent weight loss.

Then Chloe’s old breakfast video.

Toast.

Patricia’s voice.

Take her back to the kitchen.

The courtroom became quiet.

Patricia stopped smiling.

Ethan whispered to his attorney.

Rebecca continued.

“We are not asking this court to decide permanent custody today.”

She looked toward the judge.

“We are asking the court to protect a three-year-old child while evidence is properly reviewed.”

The judge ordered temporary primary residence with me.

Ethan received scheduled contact.

Patricia was not permitted unsupervised contact pending evaluation.

I almost cried from relief.

Almost.

Then Ethan’s attorney stood.

“We have concerns regarding parental alienation.”

Rebecca stiffened.

A second filing was submitted.

Ethan claimed I had been coaching Sophie.

He requested a neutral evaluation.

Granted.

Outside the courtroom, Patricia walked past me.

She stopped.

Her voice was low.

“You think you won.”

I looked at her.

“This isn’t about winning.”

Her mouth tightened.

“It always is.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“It’s about Sophie.”

For a fraction of a second, something appeared in her eyes.

Not guilt.

Fear.

I recognized it.

Patricia was not afraid of losing Sophie.

She was afraid of losing control.

That night, Robert finally contacted me again.

This time he asked to meet.

We chose a quiet café.

He looked terrible.

Unshaven.

Exhausted.

He sat across from me without ordering anything.

“I knew about the apartment,” he said.

“The Acapulco apartment?”

He nodded.

“You knew they used my signature?”

“No.”

I studied him.

He looked ashamed.

“I knew Ethan was moving money.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Patricia said it was his right.”

“His right?”

“She said you were married. That everything you earned belonged to both of you.”

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

Robert looked down.

“She’s been saying something else.”

“What?”

“That if Ethan loses custody, everyone loses everything.”

I leaned forward.

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I’m telling you the truth.”

He reached inside his jacket.

Then placed a small black USB drive on the table.

“I found this in Ethan’s office.”

I stared at it.

“What’s on it?”

“I don’t know all of it.”

“Robert.”

His face turned pale.

“But I saw one folder.”

He pushed the drive toward me.

May you like

It had a single handwritten label.

LONDON.
