Chapter 15 - THE PERFECT FRAME

For forty-eight hours, I became the villain.

Gold-digger.

Manipulator.

Pregnant heiress.

Black widow in waiting.

The headlines were relentless.

Mercer had spent years designing legal documents.

Now I understood why.

He wanted a final scapegoat.

If everything collapsed, someone needed to look like the architect.

Me.

The trust document naming me was genuine.

At least Evelyn’s signature was.

She had no memory of signing it.

The date corresponded to one of her worst drugged episodes.

Mercer knew exactly what he was doing.

If I died, Celeste could be blamed.

If Celeste was arrested, I benefited.

If Ethan became implicated in my father’s death, I benefited.

If Evelyn became incompetent, I benefited.

Every disaster seemed to move power toward me.

That was the frame.

Elegant.

Terrifying.

Even Ortiz admitted:

“If I didn’t know what I know…”

“You’d investigate me.”

“I am investigating you.”

Fair.

Ethan wanted to release every recording immediately.

I refused.

“Why?”

“Because Mercer wants panic.”

“People think you did this.”

“Let them.”

“Claire.”

“We release evidence in court.”

“Not online.”

Ethan stared.

“You’re willing to let people destroy your reputation?”

“My reputation is cheaper than a criminal case.”

That was something my father would have said.

Then I realized Mercer’s mistake.

He had built the frame too perfectly.

Real life was messy.

His story made every event benefit me.

Too neatly.

So we mapped the documents by date.

Every trust amendment.

Every medical evaluation.

Every family conflict.

Every suspicious payment.

A pattern emerged.

Mercer created a new version whenever one previous scheme became vulnerable.

Then Ortiz found the key.

One amendment was prepared two days before I told anyone I was pregnant.

Yet the document contained provisions referring to Ethan’s “expected descendant.”

Mercer knew.

Before Ethan.

Before Evelyn.

Before Celeste.

How?

Only one person besides me knew at that point.

My obstetrician.

Records showed someone accessed my confidential appointment file through an outside insurance administrator.

That administrator had a legal consultant.

Mercer Fiduciary Partners.

He had stolen private medical information.

He knew I was pregnant.

Then he built the next stage.

Ortiz smiled for the first time in days.

“He didn’t predict events.”

“He manufactured documents around stolen information.”

Exactly.

The frame cracked.

Then Rebecca Sloan contacted us.

Richard’s third archive holder.

She had been watching the news.

She had one recording we did not.

From the library.

Six months before my fall.

Mercer speaking to Celeste.

He said:

“When Claire’s child is born, you disappear.”

Celeste asked:

“What does that mean?”

Mercer answered:

“You become irrelevant.”

Her expression changed.

He saw it.

Then he began manipulating her.

“You know what Ethan thinks of you.”

“You know what Claire tells Evelyn.”

“You know they’ll take everything.”

He spent months pushing her emotionally toward conflict.

He never explicitly told her to hurt me.

He did something more sophisticated.

He made her believe violence was self-defense.

Celeste watched the video with us.

Then she stood.

“I’ll testify.”

Ethan stared.

“You’ll go to prison.”

“I know.”

“Celeste.”

“I pushed her.”

She looked at me.

“I almost killed Claire.”

Her hand moved toward my stomach.

“And Lily.”

I froze.

“How do you know that name?”

Celeste smiled sadly.

“Evelyn told me.”

I looked at her.

“For the first time in my life…”

Celeste whispered.

“…I want to do one thing before someone makes me.”

She turned toward Ortiz.

“Arrest me.”

May you like

Ortiz did.

And that night, Celeste Whitmore became the witness Graham Mercer had never expected to lose control of.
