Chapter 15 - WHAT HENRY BENNETT REALLY DID

The documents were real.
The story was not.
Henry had moved pension money.
But only for forty-eight hours.
During the 2008 banking collapse, Bennett Global faced a liquidity freeze.
Three banks failed to release committed funds.
Payroll was at risk.
Properties could have entered technical default.
Henry moved cash temporarily.
Then replaced it with his personal assets.
Legally questionable.
Morally complicated.
But employees never lost a dollar.
Adrian had removed the repayment documents.
Charlotte found them inside Henry’s archive.
Her father had made a dangerous decision.
Then accepted the cost personally.
He sold two family properties.
Liquidated investments.
Took the loss.
Charlotte could have hidden the entire episode.
Instead, she disclosed it.
Marcus stared at her.
“You understand what this may do to Henry’s reputation.”
“Yes.”
“Your family will hate it.”
“Yes.”
“Some directors will use it against you.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Charlotte looked at her father’s photograph.
“Because if I only tell the truth when it protects people I love, Adrian wins anyway.”
The disclosure hurt.
Bennett Global shares fell.
Critics attacked Henry.
Others defended him.
Charlotte refused to sanitize him.
That choice changed the board.
Charles Whitaker, the undecided director, called.
“I knew your father.”
“So did I.”
“No.”
He chuckled.
“You knew your dad.”
“I knew Henry Bennett.”
“There was a difference.”
Charlotte listened.
“He would have hated that disclosure.”
“I know.”
“And eventually admitted you were right.”
Charlotte smiled faintly.
“Probably.”
Charles paused.
“You have my vote.”
Seven.
Enough to block Adrian.
But not enough to trigger the seventy-five-percent family trust provision.
They needed one more.
And the final voting block belonged to somebody Charlotte had never met.
The Elizabeth Bennett Legacy Trust.
Beneficiary undisclosed.
Charlotte stared.

Her mother still controlled the deciding vote seventeen years after her death.
Through someone else.
