CHAPTER 1 — THE FOOTAGE NEVER LIED

Marcus didn't answer Isabella.

He didn't comfort her.

He didn't even blink.

His eyes were fixed on Khloe.

She lay curled against the marble floor, one trembling arm wrapped tightly around her stomach while blood slowly stained the emerald silk of her gown.

"Khloe..."

It was barely a whisper.

Then everything happened at once.

Doctors rushed into the suite.

Nurses pushed Marcus aside.

Someone shouted for the trauma team.

Someone else yelled that the fetal heart rate was dropping.

Marcus reached for Khloe's hand.

She gripped his fingers with surprising strength.

"Save our baby," she whispered.

Not me.

The baby.

Those four words carved themselves into Marcus's soul.

Three floors below, inside the hospital's Security Operations Center, Daniel Mercer was halfway through signing maintenance reports when an emergency alert flashed across every surveillance monitor.

VIP Suite — Medical Distress.

Daniel frowned.

He enlarged the feed.

The room appeared.

Khloe.

His niece.

Then he watched Isabella shove her.

Watched Khloe slam into the marble table.

Watched the crystal glass explode.

Watched Isabella deliberately raise her heel...

...and kick a pregnant woman lying on the floor.

Daniel stopped breathing.

For nearly twenty years he had investigated assaults, robberies, malpractice claims, and attempted murders.

Nothing prepared him for watching his own niece attacked.

His face hardened.

"No one deletes a single frame," he ordered.

"Copy every camera angle."

"Lock the entire surveillance server."

"And call the police."

Upstairs...

Operating Room Three.

Doctors fought to stop the internal bleeding.

Khloe drifted in and out of consciousness.

The baby's heartbeat weakened.

Then strengthened.

Then weakened again.

Marcus stood outside the operating room doors, still wearing blood on the sleeve of his tuxedo.

His phone vibrated endlessly.

Board members.

Investors.

Journalists asking about the gala.

He ignored every call.

For the first time in years...

Nothing mattered except the two lives behind those doors.

Meanwhile...

Isabella sat alone in a private consultation room.

She had already rewritten the story inside her head.

Khloe had slipped.

Marcus would believe her.

He always had.

She adjusted her makeup in a compact mirror.

Practiced another tear.

Another trembling breath.

She smiled.

Then the door opened.

Daniel Mercer walked in carrying a black evidence drive.

He placed it on the table.

"I've been doing hospital investigations for twenty-eight years," he said calmly.

"I've learned one thing."

He slid the drive toward her.

May you like

"Cameras don't lie."

The smile disappeared from Isabella's face.
