Chapter Two:The Empire Strikes Back

Chapter Two

The Empire Strikes Back

Daniel didn't remember leaving the mansion.

One moment he was standing in his office, staring at the empty wall where his nameplate had hung only minutes earlier.

The next, he was behind the wheel of his black Mercedes, speeding toward Ward Global headquarters.

His phone wouldn't stop ringing.

Reporters.

Board members.

Executives.

He ignored every call.

Only one name mattered.

Elena.

She had planned this.

Every second of it.

When he reached the underground parking garage, the security gate refused to open.

He rolled down his window and flashed his company badge.

The scanner beeped.

ACCESS DENIED.

"What the hell?"

He tried again.

The same message appeared.

A uniformed security supervisor walked toward the car.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Ward."

Daniel pointed at the gate.

"Open it."

"I'm sorry, sir."

"I said open it."

The supervisor remained calm.

"My instructions come directly from the Board of Directors."

Daniel stepped out of the car.

"Do you know who you're talking to?"

"Former CEO Daniel Ward."

The words landed like a punch.

"You have five minutes to leave private property."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"My property?"

The supervisor didn't answer.

He simply stood his ground.

For the first time in over a decade, Daniel found himself locked out of the company he believed he owned.

Forty-eight floors above, Elena watched everything through the floor-to-ceiling windows of her new office.

She didn't smile.

Victory wasn't what she felt.

Relief was.

Marcus stepped inside carrying another folder.

"The banks have frozen every executive account Daniel controlled."

She nodded.

"What about the internal audit?"

"It has already begun."

Marcus placed several documents on her desk.

"There is something else."

She looked up.

"The forensic accountants discovered records dating back almost four years."

Elena opened the file.

Luxury vacations.

Private jet flights.

Hidden consulting fees.

Expensive gifts.

Every payment had one thing in common.

Company money.

She closed the folder slowly.

"So it was never just an affair."

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

"It was greed."

Meanwhile, Chloe sat alone inside her downtown apartment.

The television played nonstop financial news.

Every channel showed the same headline.

WARD GLOBAL CEO REMOVED BY UNANIMOUS BOARD VOTE.

A photo of Elena appeared beside one of Daniel.

The news anchor continued.

"Sources confirm that Elena Ward is the controlling shareholder of Ward Global through the Ward Family Trust."

Chloe muted the television.

Her hands trembled.

Daniel had told her Elena was nothing more than a dependent wife.

A woman living off his success.

A nobody.

That had been a lie.

Her phone buzzed.

Daniel.

She hesitated before answering.

"Where are you?"

"I've been trying to reach you for an hour."

"You need to come over."

"I'm busy."

"Busy?"

His voice sharpened.

"My entire life is falling apart."

"Our life, Daniel."

Silence.

Then Chloe asked quietly,

"Did you know she owned the company?"

Daniel didn't answer.

"Daniel..."

"I'll explain later."

"No."

Her voice became colder.

"You'll explain now."

Another silence.

Finally he admitted,

"I didn't know."

Chloe closed her eyes.

For months she had believed she was replacing a powerless wife.

Instead...

She had helped betray the richest woman in the room.

Across town, Patricia arrived at the exclusive country club where she had spent nearly twenty years entertaining wealthy friends.

The receptionist offered an awkward smile.

"Good afternoon, Mrs. Ward."

Patricia lifted her chin.

"My usual table."

"I'm afraid..."

The young woman hesitated.

"...your membership has been suspended."

Patricia frowned.

"Suspended?"

"According to the ownership office..."

She checked her computer again.

"...all family privileges attached to Ward Global executive status have been canceled."

Patricia's face hardened.

"Call the president."

"I'm sorry."

"The president approved the decision."

Patricia stood frozen.

Around her, conversations had stopped.

People pretended not to stare.

But they were watching.

Always watching.

For years she had looked down on Elena.

Today...

She understood what humiliation actually felt like.

That evening, Daniel finally reached the penthouse.

Or at least he tried.

The concierge intercepted him before he reached the private elevator.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Ward."

Daniel didn't even slow down.

"Move."

"The ownership records changed this afternoon."

Daniel stopped.

"What records?"

"The penthouse now belongs exclusively to Ms. Elena Ward."

"I live here."

"Not anymore."

Daniel laughed in disbelief.

"My clothes are upstairs."

"They've already been packed."

Two employees rolled out four expensive suitcases.

Nothing more.

No invitation inside.

No second chance.

Just luggage.

Daniel stared at the bags.

"This is impossible."

The concierge spoke gently.

"Ms. Ward asked us to remind you..."

He unfolded a handwritten note.

Daniel recognized Elena's handwriting immediately.

Every letter was perfectly neat.

You once said I wasn't entitled to a single thing.

You were right.

I wasn't entitled.

I already owned it.

— Elena

Daniel folded the note carefully.

His hands wouldn't stop shaking.

Later that night, Elena stood alone on the penthouse balcony overlooking the city.

The skyline glittered beneath the stars.

Marcus joined her carrying two cups of coffee.

"You should get some rest."

She accepted the cup.

"I haven't slept well in years."

"You can now."

She smiled faintly.

"I don't think it's over."

Marcus looked at her.

"You think he'll fight?"

"I know Daniel."

She stared into the darkness.

"He doesn't love me."

Marcus remained silent.

"He loved winning."

A cool breeze swept across the balcony.

After several moments, Marcus spoke.

"The legal team expects lawsuits."

"I'm counting on them."

He raised an eyebrow.

"You are?"

"Every lawsuit forces discovery."

Understanding slowly crossed his face.

"The financial records."

She nodded.

"He'll expose himself trying to save himself."

Marcus couldn't help smiling.

"You've planned three moves ahead."

Elena looked toward the city lights.

"No."

"I've planned for the day I stopped protecting him."

Her phone vibrated.

A message from the head of Corporate Investigations.

Federal regulators have requested copies of the audit.

Marcus read the notification over her shoulder.

"This just became much bigger."

Elena quietly locked her phone.

"Good."

She took one last sip of coffee before turning toward the glass doors.

"Tomorrow..."

Marcus waited.

"...we stop cleaning up Daniel's mistakes."

She walked inside.

Behind her, thunder rolled across the distant skyline.

For Daniel Ward, losing his title had only been the beginning.

The real reckoning was about to arrive.
