Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO SAVED ME BY DESTROYING ME

We drove toward the old Carter estate before dawn.
Nobody spoke.
Lily slept in the back seat beside Emily.
David drove.
I sat beside him.
For the first time in twenty-eight years, I looked at the man beside me and saw a stranger.
“Tell me about the night we met.”
David's hands tightened on the wheel.
“You already know.”
“No.”
“I told you—”
“You lied.”
He swallowed.
“Your mother contacted me.”
“When?”
“Three months before your twenty-sixth birthday.”
“Why?”
“She knew she was dying.”
I looked out the window.
“What did she ask you to do?”
“Find you.”
“Why?”
“Because your father had discovered she had hidden you.”
“What did he want?”
“To use you to access the trust.”
I frowned.
“How could I access a trust I didn't know existed?”
“You couldn't.”
“Then why me?”
“Because you were the only legitimate heir.”
I stared at him.
“What about Michael?”
“He was the original heir.”
“Then why was I needed?”
“Because Michael was presumed dead.”
I looked at him.
“Presumed?”
“Yes.”
“Did my mother know he was alive?”
“She suspected.”
“And you?”
“I didn't.”
“So why marry me?”
He was silent.
I turned toward him.
“Answer me.”
“Your mother believed marrying me would give you protection.”
“Protection from my father?”
“Yes.”
“Did she know you loved me?”
David's eyes filled.
“No.”
That answer hurt more than I expected.
“What?”
“She didn't know.”
“When did you fall in love with me?”
He didn't answer.
“David.”
“The first night.”
I looked away.
“Then why did you betray me?”
“I didn't know how to protect you anymore.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You brought Melissa to our daughter's wedding.”
“I know.”
“You replaced my seat.”
“I know.”
“You humiliated me.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
“Because I needed Thomas to believe I had chosen Melissa.”
I turned.
“What?”
“If Thomas believed Melissa mattered to me, he'd follow her.”
“He was watching you?”
“For years.”
“So the affair—”
“Was real.”
I closed my eyes.
“Then don't try to soften it.”
“I won't.”
“Did you love her?”
“No.”
“Did you sleep with her?”
“Yes.”
The answer cut cleanly.
“But why?”
“Because she was the only person who could get close to Michael.”
I stared at him.
“And you used her.”
“Yes.”
“That doesn't make it better.”
“I know.”
“Then why should I forgive you?”
“You shouldn't.”
His voice was quiet.
“I didn't do those things because I deserved forgiveness.”
I looked at him.
“I did them because I thought keeping you alive mattered more.”
I shook my head.
“You don't get to decide that for me.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“That was my mistake.”
The car fell silent.
Then Emily spoke from the back.
“Mom.”
I turned.
She was awake.
“Lily told me something.”
“What?”
“She said Noah wasn't the only baby.”
I looked at David.
He frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Emily continued.
“She said there were three babies.”
David immediately stopped the car.
“What?”
Lily opened her eyes.
“Three.”
David stared at her.
“Lily, that's impossible.”
“No.”
She sat up.
“Michael told me.”
“Who is the third?”
She looked at me.
“Rose.”
My heart stopped.
“She wasn't your sister?”
“She was.”
“Then why three?”
Lily pointed at me.
“Because Mommy had another baby.”
I couldn't breathe.
“Who?”
She whispered:
“You.”
Silence.
David's face went white.
I understood.
The truth was finally taking shape.
My mother hadn't given birth to two children.
She had given birth to three.
Me.
Michael.
Rose.
And somewhere in the past, someone had erased two of us.
I looked at David.
“Did you know?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who did?”
He looked at the road.
“Your father.”
The old Carter estate appeared through the trees.
Abandoned for decades.
Its windows were boarded.
Its gates rusted.
David parked.
Thomas was waiting on the front steps.
Beside him stood Melissa.
Her hands were tied.
And next to her was a teenage girl.
Dark hair.
Pale skin.
The same crescent birthmark behind her ear.
I stopped breathing.
Rose.
My sister.
Thomas smiled.
“Welcome home.”
I stepped forward.
“Let them go.”
“Not yet.”
“What do you want?”
“The trust.”
“You said you wanted the truth.”
“I want both.”
I looked at Rose.
She stared at me.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Claire?”
My heart broke.
She knew me.
Thomas smiled.
“She has been waiting for you for twenty-three years.”
I turned toward David.
“What happened twenty-three years ago?”
David couldn't answer.
Thomas did.
“Your father ordered your mother to kill Rose.”
I froze.
“What?”
“She refused.”
“And then?”
Thomas's smile vanished.
“He killed her instead.”
I looked at my sister.
She was crying silently.
I walked toward her.
Thomas raised a gun.
“Stop.”
I stopped.
He looked at David.
“Now tell her the rest.”
David closed his eyes.
“Your father wasn't the only one who betrayed your mother.”
I stared at him.
“Who else?”
David looked at me.
“Me.”
My heart stopped.
“What did you do?”
He whispered:
“I gave your father Rose's location.”
The world went silent.
I looked at him.
“You gave him my sister.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he threatened you.”
I stepped backward.
“You traded her life for mine.”
David's face broke.
“I was twenty-eight years old.”
“You made a choice.”
“Yes.”
“You chose me.”
“Yes.”
“And Rose paid for it.”
“Yes.”
I looked at my sister.
Then at David.
Then at Thomas.
And something inside me went cold.
For twenty-eight years, everyone had told me they were protecting me.
My mother.
My husband.
My father.
Thomas.
But every act of protection had destroyed someone else.
I stepped forward.
“I'll give you the trust.”
Thomas smiled.
“But first, you release Melissa and Rose.”
He shook his head.
“You're in no position to negotiate.”
I smiled for the first time.
“Yes, I am.”
I pulled the old metal box from my coat.
Thomas's expression changed.
“You have it.”
“Yes.”
“What is inside?”
I held it up.
“The key.”
His eyes narrowed.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“Then they die.”
I looked directly at him.
“Not if you still need me alive.”
Thomas froze.
I had finally understood.
He didn't control me.
He needed me.
May you like
And for the first time in twenty-eight years—
I had leverage.
