Chapter 2: The Blackwood Response

Chapter 2: The Blackwood Response
The front door exploded open less than four minutes after the call.
Heavy footsteps thundered across the marble floor.
"Medical team! Secure the victim!"
Three men in black tactical jackets rushed inside while two paramedics dropped to their knees beside Mara.
One pressed gentle fingers against her neck.
"Pulse is weak."
Another placed a monitor against her stomach.
The room seemed to stop breathing.
Then—
A heartbeat.
Soft.
Rapid.
But unmistakably alive.
"Baby's alive," the medic said.
Relief crashed over Mara harder than the pain.
Two security officers stepped between Ethan and the paramedics.
"You can't come in here!" Ethan shouted.
"I'm her husband!"
One officer calmly produced a badge.
"Blackwood Protective Services."
"You are no longer authorized to approach Mrs. Blackwood."
Vanessa backed toward the hallway.
"I don't belong here."
She tried to slip away.
She never made it to the door.
Another officer blocked her path.
"Ms. Reed, we'd appreciate your cooperation."
Ethan forced a laugh.
"This is ridiculous."
"My wife fell."
"She's confused."
A quiet voice answered from behind him.
"Then perhaps you'll have no objection to reviewing the security footage."
Everyone turned.
An older man entered carrying a silver briefcase.
Jonathan Hale.
The attorney who had served the Blackwood family for over thirty years.
He opened the case and removed a tablet.
"The cameras in this residence were never disconnected."
Ethan's face drained of color.
"I personally installed a secure backup system after Mr. Charles Blackwood expressed concerns about Mrs. Blackwood's safety."
The screen came alive.
Every second.
Every angle.
Ethan's hand shoving Mara.
Vanessa watching.
Neither making any effort to help.
The silence was devastating.
Jonathan looked directly at Ethan.
"Attempted murder."
"Fraud."
"Conspiracy."
"And if either patient dies..."
He never finished the sentence.
He didn't need to.
The police arrived moments later.
This time, Ethan had nothing left to say.
Handcuffs closed around his wrists.
Vanessa began crying.
No one believed her tears.
Hours later, Mara awoke in the hospital.
A doctor smiled.
"You suffered several broken ribs."
"You'll need time to recover."
He paused.
"But your daughter is still fighting."
Mara closed her eyes.
May you like
For the first time since falling...
She allowed herself to hope.
