Chapter 12 - The Original Sin

The abandoned Whitaker research plant stood at the edge of an industrial district.

Broken windows stared across empty parking lots.

Rust covered the loading doors.

A large metal sign still carried Gideon Whitaker’s name.

Maren remembered visiting as a child.

Her father had given her a white laboratory coat and allowed her to press a button that sealed boxes of medical supplies.

She had believed the factory produced only things that saved lives.

Archive Seven had revealed otherwise.

Before the shutdown, Conrad manipulated trial data inside those walls.

Patients received unsafe cardiac medication.

Three died.

Their deaths were concealed.

Anna Mercer discovered the records.

Conrad killed her before she could testify.

Now her son waited inside.

Maren, Helena, Celeste, and Nathan approached in a single vehicle.

Federal agents remained hidden beyond the industrial perimeter.

Ruiz had objected to every part of the plan.

Maren had reminded her that Reed expected surveillance and would kill Lucas if he detected movement.

Nathan wore a concealed audio transmitter built into his shirt button.

Celeste carried a duplicate Archive key.

It would open nothing.

Helena had removed the magazine from her pistol before surrendering it at the entrance.

They entered through the loading bay.

Emergency lights illuminated a path across the floor.

Reed’s voice came through overhead speakers.

“Right on time.”

Maren looked toward the security cameras.

“Release Lucas.”

“After Helena opens the vault channel.”

Conrad appeared on a metal walkway above them.

He was nearly seventy, broad-shouldered, and gray-haired.

Age had not softened him.

Beside him stood Nathan’s son.

Lucas’s hands were tied.

A guard held him near the railing.

Conrad looked down at Helena.

“You have aged better than your obituary photograph.”

Helena’s face became still.

“You should have stayed dead,” he continued.

“You should have joined your wife,” Helena replied.

Something flickered across Conrad’s expression.

“Anna was weak.”

“She was brave enough to expose you.”

“She was prepared to destroy her own family.”

“No.”

“You destroyed it.”

Reed stepped from behind one of the chemical tanks.

He wore dark clothes and carried a pistol.

When he saw Maren, his gaze moved over the bruising he had caused.

For half a second, something almost human crossed his face.

Then it vanished.

“You should be in bed.”

“You should be in prison.”

“Perhaps we will both be disappointed.”

Celeste moved beside Maren.

Reed looked at her.

“You survived.”

“No thanks to you.”

“You chose Maren after all.”

“I chose myself.”

Reed smiled.

“You never knew how.”

He ordered Helena to approach the central terminal.

The original Archive vault connection had been installed beneath the plant because Gideon believed no one would search a condemned facility.

Helena placed her hand against the biometric reader.

It recognized her.

A second authorization was required.

Reed pointed the pistol at Maren.

“Your turn.”

Maren rolled forward.

Nathan watched Lucas above.

The young man’s face was pale.

Conrad held a second weapon near him.

Maren reached the terminal.

The screen requested primary heir approval.

She entered her code.

A map appeared.

The physical vault was located beneath an abandoned hospital in Pennsylvania.

Reed connected the silver drive.

“Transfer the access certificates.”

“If I do, you release Lucas.”

“Yes.”

“And Celeste.”

Reed laughed.

“Celeste is not a hostage.”

“She is evidence.”

Celeste’s face tightened.

Maren looked at Reed.

“What did my father do to you?”

“He took everything.”

“Conrad killed your mother.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you standing beside him?”

Reed’s gaze moved toward Conrad.

“My father did what survival required.”

“He burned Anna alive.”

“He told me it was an accident.”

“You heard her recording.”

“Recordings can be made to say anything.”

Helena stared at him.

“You do not believe that.”

Reed’s jaw tightened.

Maren understood.

Accepting the truth about Conrad would mean every crime Reed committed had served a lie.

It would mean he had broken Maren, betrayed Celeste, and murdered Gideon for the man who killed his own mother.

He could not admit that and remain the person he believed himself to be.

“You know the recording is real,” Maren said.

Reed raised the gun.

“Transfer the certificates.”

Maren selected the command.

The screen began processing.

Nathan looked upward at Lucas.

The transmitter in his shirt sent every word to Ruiz.

Or so they hoped.

A warning appeared on the terminal.

EXTERNAL SECURITY CONNECTION DETECTED.

Reed saw it.

His head snapped toward Nathan.

“You brought them.”

Nathan moved before anyone expected him to.

He grabbed Reed’s wrist.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Celeste pulled Maren backward.

Helena struck the guard near the terminal.

Above them, Conrad shoved Lucas toward the railing.

Nathan shouted his son’s name.

Federal agents breached the loading doors.

Gunfire echoed through the plant.

Reed tore free and ran toward the western corridor.

Conrad dragged Lucas along the walkway.

Helena pointed toward a stairwell.

“Go!”

Maren followed Celeste through the smoke and alarms.

They reached the lower laboratory.

Reed appeared behind them.

He slammed the emergency door shut before the agents could enter.

The room sealed.

Red lights flashed.

Reed aimed the gun at Celeste.

“You always were the weaker sister.”

Celeste stepped in front of Maren.

“No.”

“I was the easier one to manipulate.”

Reed fired.

Celeste fell.

Maren screamed her name.

Reed approached.

The terminal behind him completed its process.

TRANSFER SUCCESSFUL.

He smiled.

“Thank you, Maren.”

Then a second message appeared.

CERTIFICATES CORRUPTED.

PHYSICAL VAULT PERMANENTLY SEALED.

Reed’s smile vanished.

Maren looked up at him.

“I told you.”

“I learned to build my own escape plans.”

Reed struck the terminal with the gun.

“You destroyed the vault.”

“I protected the evidence.”

He turned toward her.

“Then you have nothing left to bargain with.”

Maren looked past him.

Celeste was moving.

The bullet had struck her shoulder.

She reached for the emergency release beneath a laboratory table.

Maren kept Reed’s attention.

“You never loved me.”

“No.”

“You never loved Celeste.”

“No.”

“You never loved your father.”

Reed’s face tightened.

Maren continued.

“You only loved the person he promised you would become.”

Celeste pulled the release.

A steel partition dropped between Reed and Maren.

The laboratory’s decontamination system activated.

Reed was trapped on the opposite side.

Agents broke through the exterior door.

Reed fired twice before they forced him to the floor.

Maren reached Celeste.

Blood spread across her sleeve, but she was conscious.

Celeste looked at her and gave a weak laugh.

“I finally stood in front of something.”

Maren held pressure against the wound.

“Do not make this sound heroic.”

“I know.”

“You still have to answer for what you did.”

“I know.”

Above them, another shot echoed.

Then silence.

Nathan’s voice came through the radio.

Lucas was safe.

Conrad had escaped through the upper roof.

May you like

Again.

But Reed Mercer was finally in handcuffs.
