Chapter 11 - THE EMPEROR IN THE CELL

Nathan sat inside his reinforced detention cell, unaware that Julian Mercer was racing toward Chicago to make him the most powerful criminal asset in the country.

At least, that was what we hoped.

My mother was airlifted to a secure military hospital.

The bullet had passed through her side without striking a major organ.

She would survive.

My father refused treatment until the helicopter lifted.

He stood on the frozen field watching Eleanor disappear into the night.

For a moment, he did not look like Elias Vale.

He looked like a man who had already buried his wife once.

Mara opened the Meridian ledger case during the flight back to Chicago.

The device inside resembled a thick black tablet.

It had no visible ports.

No manufacturer markings.

The screen requested two forms of authentication.

FOUNDER KEY.

SUCCESSOR KEY.

My mother held the founder key.

Julian had stolen it from her during the escape.

The successor key had been assigned years earlier.

To Nathan.

“Why him?” I asked.

Mara reviewed the Nightglass files.

“Meridian needed a public-facing successor who looked independent.”

“Nathan had global shipping access.”

“Political connections.”

“No formal link to Vale Dominion.”

My father looked at the encrypted screen.

“And he was married to Victoria.”

“My bloodline authenticated his proximity.”

I stared at him.

“So I was not only leverage.”

“I was part of the security system.”

Elias nodded once.

“Eleanor designed the original succession protocol before Meridian became corrupt.”

“She intended it for a trusted family member.”

“Julian altered it.”

“He chose Nathan.”

The man I had married had been positioned to inherit the network created by my parents.

Nathan’s ambition had never been limited to Ashford Global.

Perhaps he had not known the name Meridian.

But he had spent years preparing himself to accept power without asking where it came from.

Agent Reyes contacted the federal bunker.

No response.

He tried again.

The line failed.

Mara checked the security grid.

“The bunker is offline.”

Julian had already reached it.

We landed on a restricted helipad near the courthouse.

Federal tactical units surrounded the building.

The bunker entrance showed no signs of forced entry.

Inside, six officers lay unconscious.

A medical gas had entered through the ventilation system.

Nathan’s cell was empty.

On the wall, someone had written one sentence.

THE EMPEROR REQUIRES A THRONE.

Security footage showed Julian entering the facility using biometric credentials belonging to my father.

Elias stared at the recording.

“He copied my authorization.”

“When?” Reyes asked.

“At the observatory.”

“The remote?”

“Or the archive console.”

Julian had left nothing to chance.

Nathan’s transport vehicle was found abandoned beneath an overpass.

The driver was alive but sedated.

A message waited on the dashboard.

MIDNIGHT.

ASHFORD GLOBAL TOWER.

BRING THE LEDGER.

Ashford Global’s headquarters had been sealed under federal warrant.

But its executive tower remained one of the most secure private buildings in Chicago.

Nathan knew every hidden access route.

Julian knew Vale Dominion’s systems.

Together, they could turn the tower into a fortress.

“Why demand the ledger?” I asked.

“He needs both keys and the device,” Mara said.

“What happens after activation?”

“The successor gains access to every Meridian asset.”

“Bank accounts.”

“Blackmail archives.”

“Operatives.”

“Judicial contacts.”

“Government officers.”

Nathan would not merely regain his empire.

He would inherit the machinery that protected it.

My phone rang.

Nathan.

I answered.

“Victoria.”

His voice was calm again.

The panic from the detention room had disappeared.

Julian had given him hope.

“You escaped.”

“I was extracted.”

“You mean rescued?”

“I mean recognized.”

The old arrogance was returning.

“What did Julian promise you?”

“The truth.”

“He chose you because you are easy to control.”

Nathan laughed.

“That is what your father says about everyone he cannot own.”

“You knew about the succession protocol.”

“Not until tonight.”

“But you accepted it immediately.”

“Why wouldn’t I?”

“Because Meridian destroys people.”

“So does Vale Dominion.”

I looked at my father.

Nathan continued.

“Your family built this world.”

“Do not become moral because you lost control of it.”

“My family tried to stop it.”

“Your mother founded it.”

“Your father financed it.”

“And you married the man chosen to inherit it.”

His words were designed to place us all on the same level.

We were not.

My parents had made terrible choices.

Nathan had enjoyed cruelty.

There was a difference between guilt and appetite.

“What do you want?” I asked.

“The ledger.”

“In exchange for what?”

“Your mother’s life.”

“She is safe.”

A pause.

Nathan had not known.

“Then your father’s life.”

Elias stepped closer to the phone.

Nathan heard the movement.

“You are there, Elias.”

My father took the device.

“You will not survive Julian.”

Nathan’s voice hardened.

“I survived your daughter.”

“No.”

I took the phone back.

“You survived because I chose evidence before revenge.”

Silence.

“Midnight,” Nathan said.

“Bring the ledger.”

“If you activate it, every government agency in the country will hunt you.”

“Governments negotiate with power.”

“They arrest men who confuse cruelty with power.”

Nathan’s breathing changed.

For one instant, the man from Blackthorn Manor returned.

“I can still ruin you.”

“You already did your worst.”

“No.”

He lowered his voice.

“I can show the world what your father made you do.”

My blood turned cold.

“What are you talking about?”

“Ask Elias about the Raven List.”

The call ended.

I turned toward my father.

“What is the Raven List?”

Elias did not answer.

Mara looked at him.

Her expression changed first.

“You told me it was destroyed.”

“What is it?” I demanded.

My father finally spoke.

“A list of operations conducted outside legal authority.”

“Whose operations?”

“Mine.”

“How many people were targeted?”

“Hundreds.”

“And my name?”

He looked directly at me.

“You authorized one.”

I felt the room tilt.

“When?”

“After Nathan pushed you down the stairs.”

“What did I authorize?”

“You called me from the hospital.”

“You said you wanted every person protecting him removed.”

“I was drugged.”

“In pain.”

“You said you wanted him powerless.”

“What did you do?”

My father’s silence answered before his words.

“I began dismantling his political protection.”

“Illegally?”

“Yes.”

Nathan possessed proof that my father had used my words to authorize a covert campaign.

If released, it could destroy Vale Dominion.

It could also make me appear complicit.

At midnight, Nathan expected me to choose between surrendering Meridian and exposing my own family.

May you like

He still believed shame could control me.

This time, I planned to teach him what happened when nothing remained to hide.
