Chapter 2: The Empire Begins to Burn

Damian Cross stood at the head of the boardroom table, a crystal glass of champagne raised in his hand.

"Ladies and gentlemen," he said with practiced sorrow, "my wife suffered a tragic accident early this morning. This is a heartbreaking day... but the company must move forward."

Around the room, directors lowered their heads.

Some murmured condolences.

Others applauded his strength.

Only Vanessa smiled.

She stood beside him wearing a white designer dress—and the diamond bracelet Damian had given me on our tenth anniversary.

She wasn't even pretending anymore.

Damian reached for the documents that would officially appoint him permanent CEO.

The chairman nodded.

"You've carried this company for years. The board unanimously supports your appointment."

Before Damian could sign...

Every phone in the room vibrated.

Once.

Then again.

Then continuously.

Executives frowned as notifications flooded their screens.

Confidential Files Received by Authorities.

The room fell silent.

Damian's smile disappeared.

"What is this?" he muttered.

One director opened the first video attachment.

The projector automatically connected to his laptop.

Damian's own face filled the screen.

The footage showed him sitting in his private office with Vanessa.

His voice echoed through the boardroom.

"When she's dead, every share belongs to me."

Vanessa laughed.

"No one will suspect a freezer malfunction."

Someone in the room gasped.

Another executive pushed his chair back so hard it crashed onto the floor.

"This... this can't be real."

Then another recording began.

Damian bribing a government inspector.

Another.

Ordering accountants to hide millions through offshore companies.

Another.

Threatening a whistleblower who later disappeared from the company.

Each video was timestamped.

Authenticated.

Impossible to deny.

The chairman slowly removed his glasses.

His hands were shaking.

"Damian..."

"Tell me this is fake."

Damian couldn't answer.

Because he knew exactly where those recordings had come from.

His wife.

The woman he believed was already dead.

Suddenly, the boardroom doors burst open.

"Federal agents! Nobody move!"

Men and women wearing FBI jackets entered with search warrants in their hands.

Behind them came investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Financial Crimes Division, and state prosecutors.

One agent walked directly toward Damian.

"Damian Cross, your company is now under federal investigation for fraud, conspiracy, money laundering, tax evasion, and attempted murder."

The champagne glass slipped from Damian's hand.

It shattered across the marble floor.

"No..." he whispered.

"This isn't possible."

Outside the glass walls of headquarters, black SUVs surrounded the building.

News helicopters circled overhead.

Employees crowded the windows, watching agents carry boxes of documents, hard drives, and computers out of the offices.

Television stations interrupted regular programming.

Share prices began to collapse.

Within thirty minutes...

Cross Holdings lost nearly forty percent of its market value.

Investors fled.

Banks froze company credit lines.

Business partners canceled contracts.

Everything Damian had spent twenty years building was crumbling before his eyes.

The emergency board meeting lasted less than fifteen minutes.

The chairman stood.

"By unanimous vote, Damian Cross is hereby removed as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately."

No one objected.

No one defended him.

The same people who had applauded him moments earlier refused to even meet his eyes.

Vanessa quietly slipped toward the side exit.

She almost made it.

An FBI agent blocked her path.

"Vanessa Reed?"

She froze.

"You're under arrest for conspiracy, financial fraud, and aiding an attempted homicide."

Cold steel handcuffs closed around her wrists.

She turned desperately toward Damian.

"Do something!"

For the first time in his life...

Damian Cross had no power left to save anyone.

At that exact moment, twenty miles away, firefighters forced open the frozen warehouse door.

One paramedic shouted,

"She's alive!"

Barely conscious, I opened my eyes as warm blankets covered my body.

My heartbeat was weak.

My breathing was shallow.

But I was alive.

As the ambulance doors closed, I looked toward the flashing police lights surrounding the estate.

The first move had been mine.

Now...

Damian would learn what it felt like to lose everything.
