Chapter 10 - The Brother I Never Knew

Nathan knew.

That was the worst part.

He had known since he was seventeen.

My mother wrote him letters.

Not many.

Four.

She never called herself his mother.

She called herself Evelyn.

The arrangement had been made at birth.

Thomas Keene and his wife raised Nathan publicly as a nephew in the extended Mercer family.

Vanessa grew up believing he was simply her older brother because her parents later became his legal guardians.

Family histories become strangely flexible when everyone agrees not to ask questions.

Nathan learned the truth after finding trust documents.

He confronted Martin.

Martin told him the Harringtons had abandoned him.

That my mother had been forced to surrender him.

That Charles Harrington paid everyone to keep him hidden.

Not all of that was true.

But enough was.

Nathan grew up watching my photograph appear in magazines.

Elena Harrington graduates.

Elena Harrington joins family business.

Elena Harrington marries Julian Vale.

Elena Harrington launches Grand Meridian concept.

While he received anonymous money through a trust he could not control.

He hated me.

Not for anything I had done.

For having the life he believed had been stolen from him.

When we met, he couldn't look at me.

The federal prosecutor allowed the meeting because Nathan had begun cooperating.

I sat across from him in a plain conference room.

“You knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“When we met at the Aspen opening three years ago?”

“Yes.”

“You shook my hand.”

“Yes.”

“You told me you admired my work.”

“I did.”

I almost laughed.

“That's psychotic.”

“Probably.”

“Did you help Julian because you wanted revenge on me?”

Nathan finally looked up.

“At first.”

“And later?”

“I realized Martin wasn't trying to correct anything.”

“What was he trying to do?”

“Own it.”

There it was.

The oldest disease in the story.

Ownership.

Grandfather wanted control.

Mom wanted freedom.

Martin wanted revenge.

Julian wanted status.

Nathan wanted recognition.

And everybody kept confusing property with love.

“Why cooperate now?”

“Because Martin planned to eliminate Julian too.”

I leaned forward.

“What?”

“Julian thinks Northstar belongs to him.”

“Of course he does.”

“It doesn't.”

“Who controls it?”

Nathan gave a humorless smile.

“Martin.”

The recreated Northstar company contained a hidden preferred-share structure.

Julian would have controlled the public-facing hospitality company.

But Martin's private entity retained conversion rights.

If exercised, those rights would give Martin majority ownership.

Julian had been planning to steal from us.

Martin had been planning to steal from Julian.

“What about you?”

“I got five percent.”

“For betraying your own sister?”

His face hardened.

“You weren't my sister when this started.”

“I was. You just hated me.”

That landed.

He looked away.

“What changed?”

Nathan rubbed his hands together.

“Vanessa.”

“What about her?”

“Martin told me she'd be protected.”

“From what?”

“Julian.”

My stomach tightened.

Nathan explained that Martin expected my marriage to collapse violently.

He believed Julian might become unpredictable once his position was threatened.

Vanessa had become emotionally attached to Julian, which Martin considered dangerous.

“He wanted her out before the final transfer.”

“How?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“I don't.”

“Nathan.”

He looked frightened.

“Martin asked me for Vanessa's passport information.”

“Why?”

“He said he was arranging a safe place for her overseas.”

“Did you give it to him?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

Vanessa had planned a trip to Paris the following week.

Martin encouraged her to go.

A private aircraft had been booked.

Destination supposedly France.

The flight plan Rebecca later found said otherwise.

The jet was scheduled to continue from Paris to Montenegro.

Vanessa had no idea.

The villa waiting there was owned by a Northstar shell company.

Maybe Martin intended to hide her.

Maybe silence her.

Maybe simply remove her from American investigators.

Whatever his plan, it proved one thing.

Vanessa was no longer only an accomplice.

She was a loose end.

And Martin Keene had begun cleaning up loose ends.

The same day, police went to his Manhattan apartment.

Empty.

His office had been stripped.

Two computers were gone.

His passport was missing.

At 4:05 p.m., Martin disappeared.

But before leaving, he scheduled an email.

It arrived simultaneously in the inboxes of six newspapers, the attorney general, three board members, and me.

The subject line read:

THE REAL OWNER OF HARRINGTON HOSPITALITY.

Attached was a DNA report.

Nathan Mercer was confirmed as Evelyn Harrington's biological son.

And beneath the report, Martin had written:

If Elena Harrington believes blood makes her queen, perhaps she should explain why her brother received nothing.

By sunset, my family's secret was public.

By nightfall, half the country knew I had a brother.

And by midnight, Nathan had filed a legal claim against the Harrington Continuity Trust.

The man helping us investigate Julian was now demanding half my inheritance.
