CHAPTER 2:The Governor's Ultimatum

No one moved.

The orchestra had stopped playing.

The champagne servers stood frozen beside silver trays, afraid to interrupt the silence that had settled over the ballroom.

Mark looked as though the floor beneath him had vanished.

Governor Thomas Sterling never raised his voice.

He didn't need to.

His quiet authority carried farther than shouting ever could.

"You shoved my daughter."

The sentence landed heavier than any accusation.

Mark swallowed.

"Governor Sterling... I—"

"You will address me as Governor only while this remains a public event."

The Governor's eyes never left him.

"Once we leave this ballroom, you'll address me as the father of the woman you assaulted."

A murmur rippled through the crowd.

Phones slowly appeared beneath tables.

Several guests discreetly began recording.

Julian Vance hurried toward the Governor.

"Governor, perhaps we should continue this conversation somewhere private—"

"No."

His answer was immediate.

"My daughter was humiliated in public."

He looked around the room.

"So the truth will remain public."

Sarah squeezed Clara's hand.

"You don't have to stand anymore."

"I'm okay."

She wasn't.

Another wave of pain rolled through her abdomen.

Not sharp.

Not constant.

But enough to make her breathing uneven.

The Governor noticed instantly.

His expression hardened.

"Get my physician."

One of his security agents touched an earpiece.

"Already on the way, Governor."

Evelyn finally stepped forward.

"Governor Sterling, this has all been blown out of proportion."

She wore the same practiced smile that had charmed investors and magazine reporters.

"I simply stumbled. Clara became emotional and—"

"Miss Thorne."

The Governor turned toward her.

"For your sake..."

"I hope you choose your next sentence carefully."

Her smile faltered.

"My security detail reviewed the ballroom cameras before I entered."

The room collectively inhaled.

"There are six camera angles covering this room."

Evelyn's face turned pale.

"And unlike rumors..."

"Video doesn't lie."

Mark stared at Evelyn.

"You told me there weren't any cameras."

She looked back at him in horror.

"I... I thought—"

"You thought wrong."

Governor Sterling nodded toward one of his aides.

"Preserve every second of the footage."

"Yes, Governor."

Mark suddenly understood.

This wasn't simply a marital argument anymore.

This was evidence.

Evidence witnessed by North Carolina's highest elected official.

His political career flashed before his eyes.

"Governor, please."

His polished confidence finally cracked.

"I made a mistake."

"I was under pressure."

"I reacted badly."

"I never intended to hurt Clara."

Governor Sterling looked at him with complete indifference.

"No."

"You intended to impress another woman."

"And my daughter happened to be standing in the way."

The words cut deeper because they were true.

Sarah looked at Mark with disgust.

"You don't even deserve to say her name."

Ten minutes later—

The ballroom had transformed into organized chaos.

Governor Sterling's physician knelt beside Clara.

"Blood pressure is elevated."

He gently examined her abdomen.

"Has the baby moved recently?"

Clara closed her eyes.

"A little."

"Any bleeding?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"We're not taking chances."

The physician stood.

"Governor, I recommend immediate transport to University Medical Center."

The Governor didn't hesitate.

"Prepare the convoy."

Mark stepped forward.

"I'll ride with my wife."

"No."

The answer came from Clara.

It was the first time she'd looked directly at him since the Governor arrived.

Her voice was soft.

Steady.

Emotionless.

"I don't want you near me."

He blinked.

"Clara..."

"For months..."

She spoke slowly.

"I kept believing the man I married was still somewhere inside you."

A tear slid down her cheek.

"Tonight I realized he died long ago."

The words hurt more than shouting ever could.

Mark reached toward her.

She stepped back.

The distance between them felt impossible to cross.

Governor Sterling nodded once.

"Escort my daughter."

Security immediately surrounded Clara and Sarah.

Mark instinctively moved after them.

Two agents blocked his path.

"I'm her husband."

One of them answered calmly.

"Not for much longer."

Outside—

Television cameras were already gathering.

News of the Governor's unexpected appearance had spread through downtown Raleigh in minutes.

As Clara was helped into the black SUV, she looked back one last time.

Mark still stood beneath the ballroom entrance.

Alone.

Evelyn had quietly disappeared.

For the first time in years...

He looked afraid.

Not of losing his career.

Not of the Governor.

Afraid of losing her.

But some things break long before they finally fall apart.

And Clara knew...

Their marriage had ended the moment he'd chosen another woman over his unborn child.

The SUV door closed.

The convoy disappeared into the night.

Behind them—

Mark Harrison stood beneath the glittering lights of the charity gala, watching the only person who had ever truly loved him drive away forever.

And he had no idea...

His worst nightmare had only just begun.
