CHAPTER 10 — THE HUSBAND SHE WAS WARNED ABOUT

The alarm screamed through the entire building.

Red emergency lights began flashing across the executive floor.

Emily stood completely still.

Her eyes were fixed on Daniel.

My daughter's husband.

The man my mother had just identified as our enemy.

Daniel didn't move.

He didn't defend himself.

He didn't deny it.

He simply stared at the black screen where my mother's face had disappeared.

Then he whispered:

“She wasn't supposed to know.”

Emily's face crumpled.

“Know what?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Everything.”

I stepped between them.

“What exactly did my mother mean?”

Daniel's eyes met mine.

“I don't know.”

“That's not good enough.”

“I know.”

“You were identified as the target.”

“I know.”

“You were sent to marry my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the trust.”

“Yes.”

“And now my mother says you're the person we should fear.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Emily stared at him.

“You're not even going to fight for yourself?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Because I don't know which part of the truth you want first.”

The alarms continued.

Arthur suddenly shouted:

“We have to move.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because that alarm isn't for a fire.”

He pointed toward the security monitor.

The screen showed the lobby.

Men in dark suits were entering the building.

Not firefighters.

Not police.

Security teams.

Six of them.

Then eight.

Then more.

David stepped toward the monitor.

“They're Kane security.”

Arthur nodded.

“They're here for the archive.”

Melissa grabbed the flash drive from the desk.

“Then we destroy it.”

“No.”

I stopped her.

“We need copies.”

Daniel looked at the server.

“The system is isolated.”

“Can you download it?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Ten minutes.”

The alarms grew louder.

David looked toward the elevator.

“They'll be here in less than five.”

“Then we have five minutes.”

Daniel sat at the terminal.

His fingers moved quickly.

Files began transferring.

I watched the progress bar.

12%.

18%.

I turned to Arthur.

“Who sent them?”

“Richard.”

“Why now?”

“Because he knows the archive is open.”

“How?”

Arthur looked at Daniel.

“Someone told him.”

I stared at Daniel.

Daniel didn't look up.

“It wasn't me.”

“Then who?”

No answer.

The progress bar reached 31%.

Emily stood beside me.

Her hands were shaking.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“If Daniel really planned to steal everything…”

She looked at him.

“…why is he helping us now?”

I had no answer.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Because stealing the trust was never the final objective.”

I turned.

“What was?”

He looked at Emily.

“Control.”

“Control of what?”

“Your identity.”

I frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does.”

He turned the monitor toward us.

A file appeared.

PROJECT FAMILY — SUBJECT EMILY CARTER

Below it was a psychological profile.

Her childhood.

Her fears.

Her friendships.

Her education.

Her relationship with me.

Her relationship with David.

Even her private habits.

I felt sick.

“They studied her.”

Daniel nodded.

“For years.”

“Why?”

“Because they needed to know what would make her surrender control.”

Emily looked at the screen.

“What would make me surrender?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Love.”

She stared at him.

He looked away.

“They believed if I married you, you'd trust me enough to sign anything I put in front of you.”

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“And would you have done it?”

Daniel's voice cracked.

“I almost did.”

Silence.

“Almost?”

“My father gave me the documents.”

“What documents?”

“Power-of-attorney papers.”

Emily looked at him.

“You wanted me to sign them?”

“Yes.”

“Did I?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I couldn't.”

Emily stared.

“Why not?”

Daniel finally looked directly at her.

“Because by then, I loved you more than I feared my father.”

The progress bar reached 46%.

Then the screen froze.

Daniel swore.

“What happened?”

“They're attacking the network.”

“Can you stop them?”

“Not from here.”

Arthur pulled a gun from beneath his jacket.

I froze.

“You have a gun?”

“I'm not here to discuss that.”

He moved toward the door.

David stepped in front of him.

“You're not going out there.”

“They'll come through that door.”

“Then we hold it.”

Arthur looked at him.

“You're still trying to protect her.”

David answered quietly:

“I never stopped.”

I stared at him.

For years, I had believed David had stopped loving me.

Maybe that was the lie I had been told.

Maybe the affair had been real.

Maybe his betrayal had been real.

But perhaps not everything I believed about it was true.

I looked at Melissa.

She was staring at David.

Then she whispered:

“He never touched me.”

I turned.

“What?”

Melissa looked directly at me.

“Not once.”

David closed his eyes.

I couldn't speak.

Melissa continued.

“The relationship was staged.”

“For whom?”

“Richard.”

“Why?”

“To convince him David was no longer loyal to your family.”

I stared at David.

“Then why did you let me believe you were having an affair?”

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because Richard was watching you.”

“And you thought humiliating me would protect me?”

“I thought making you hate me would keep you away from me.”

My throat tightened.

“You could have told me.”

“I couldn't.”

“You always had a choice.”

“I know.”

The elevator doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Three men stepped out.

Arthur raised his weapon.

“Down!”

Gunfire exploded through the hallway.

Emily screamed.

David pulled me behind the desk.

Daniel pushed Emily to the floor.

Melissa crouched beside us.

Glass shattered.

The lights flickered.

Then the men disappeared back into the elevator.

Arthur looked down.

“They're not trying to kill us.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“They're buying time.”

“For what?”

Arthur looked at the server.

“To erase the archive.”

Daniel shouted:

“Thirty seconds!”

“What?”

“They're remotely wiping the system.”

I ran toward him.

“Can you stop it?”

“Maybe.”

“How?”

“Someone has to authorize a manual transfer.”

“Do it.”

“I need Emily.”

She stepped forward.

“What do you need?”

“Your biometric authorization.”

She placed her hand on the scanner.

Nothing happened.

The system flashed:

SECONDARY AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

I stepped forward.

The scanner recognized me.

ELIZABETH CARTER — VERIFIED.

The transfer resumed.

67%.

72%.

Then the system displayed another message.

FINAL AUTHORIZATION: DAVID CARTER.

I turned.

David stared at the screen.

“What?”

I looked at him.

“Authorize it.”

He didn't move.

“David.”

He stepped toward the terminal.

Placed his hand against the scanner.

The screen turned green.

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

The archive was copied.

Then the entire server went black.

Silence.

The alarms stopped.

We all stood there, breathing heavily.

I looked at David.

“You knew.”

He shook his head.

“I didn't know.”

“Then why did the system require you?”

“Because your father designed it.”

“Why?”

David looked at me.

“Because he trusted me to be the last person who would ever betray you.”

I looked away.

I didn't know whether to believe him.

Then Daniel picked up the flash drive.

“We need to leave.”

Emily looked at him.

“I'm not going anywhere with you.”

Daniel stopped.

“I understand.”

She swallowed.

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You married me under false pretenses.”

“Yes.”

“You were sent to destroy my family.”

“Yes.”

She looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“And you expect me to forgive you?”

“No.”

“Then what do you want?”

Daniel looked at her.

“To keep you alive.”

She shook her head.

“You don't get to decide that anymore.”

He nodded.

“You're right.”

He placed the flash drive in her hand.

“Then decide for yourself.”

We escaped through the underground parking garage.

Arthur drove.

David sat beside him.

Melissa sat in the back.

Emily and I were behind them.

Daniel followed in another vehicle.

I watched him through the rear window.

He didn't try to approach us.

He simply followed.

As we drove away from the building, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

My mother's voice came through.

“Did you get the archive?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“Mom, where are you?”

“I can't tell you.”

“You can now.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because someone is listening.”

I looked at the others.

“Who?”

“Your mother's voice became quieter.”

“Someone you trust.”

I frowned.

“David?”

“No.”

“Arthur?”

“No.”

“Melissa?”

“No.”

“Daniel?”

A pause.

“No.”

I froze.

“Then who?”

She whispered:

“Emily.”

My heart stopped.

I looked at my daughter.

She was staring out the window.

“Emily?”

“Yes.”

“What about her?”

“She doesn't know what was done to her.”

I didn't understand.

“What was done to her?”

“Before she was born, your father changed the inheritance.”

I stared.

“How?”

“Emily isn't simply the beneficiary.”

“What is she?”

My mother's voice trembled.

“She is the key.”

“To what?”

“The original ownership.”

I looked at the flash drive.

“What does that mean?”

“It means the company was never legally transferred to David.”

I looked toward my husband.

“Then who owns it?”

My mother whispered:

“You do.”

I froze.

“What?”

“The company has belonged to you since the day your father died.”

I couldn't speak.

“All these years…”

“Yes.”

“Then why did David run it?”

“Because your father needed someone to appear to be the owner.”

I looked at David.

He heard me.

His face changed.

My mother continued:

“And that's why Richard has spent twenty-eight years trying to destroy your marriage.”

“Why?”

“Because as long as you remained married to David, he couldn't force a public transfer.”

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Then the affair…”

“Was part of the plan.”

I closed my eyes.

“And Melissa?”

“An operative.”

“Daniel?”

“An infiltrator.”

“Arthur?”

“Your father's protector.”

“David?”

A pause.

“Your father's shield.”

I looked at my husband.

For the first time, I saw him differently.

Not as the man who had betrayed me.

But as a man who had spent twenty-eight years carrying a secret that had destroyed both of us.

Then my mother's voice changed.

“Elizabeth.”

“Yes?”

“There is one thing I haven't told you.”

“What?”

“The reason Richard is moving now.”

I waited.

“He knows the original ownership document has been found.”

My heart pounded.

“Where is it?”

My mother whispered:

“Inside your wedding ring.”

I looked down at my hand.

The ring I had worn for twenty-eight years.

The ring I had almost taken off after discovering David's affair.

The ring my father had personally chosen.

I stared at it.

“What?”

“Your father hid the final key inside it.”

My breath caught.

“Mom…”

“Yes?”

“Why didn't you tell me this before?”

Her answer was almost a whisper.

“Because I was waiting for you to stop loving David.”

I froze.

“What does that have to do with the ring?”

“Everything.”

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

Then slowly looked at my wedding ring.

For twenty-eight years, I had believed it represented a marriage.

A promise.

A life.

Maybe it had been something else entirely.

Maybe it had been a vault.

I pulled the ring from my finger.

Emily looked at me.

“What did Grandma say?”

I didn't answer.

I turned the ring beneath the light.

There.

A tiny seam I had never noticed.

I pressed it.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a microscopic metal key.

And engraved across it were four words:

OWNERSHIP CANNOT BE STOLEN.

David stared at it.

Arthur went pale.

Melissa whispered:

“That's impossible.”

Daniel stepped out of the car behind us.

He looked at the key.

Then at me.

And said:

“Your father didn't hide the company.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel looked terrified.

“He hid the person who legally owns it.”

I stared at him.

“Who?”

He looked at Emily.

Then at me.

“You.”

Before I could respond, a black SUV appeared at the end of the road.

It accelerated toward us.

Arthur shouted:

“Hold on!”

The SUV slammed into the side of our car.

Everything spun.

Glass exploded.

Emily screamed.

My head struck the window.

The world went dark.

And the last thing I heard before losing consciousness was David shouting my name.

Then another voice.

A woman's voice.

Very close to my ear.

My mother's.

“Elizabeth…”

A pause.

May you like

“You were never the target.”

“You were the owner.”
