Chapter 14 - THE LAST TABLE

Thomas waited in the dining room.
The old Carter dining room.
The same room where my father had once hosted businessmen, politicians, lawyers, and people whose names appeared in the files beneath the house.
Now the long table was covered with documents.
Birth certificates.
Bank statements.
Photographs.
Adoption records.
Names of children.
Names of families.
Proof.
Enough to destroy an empire.
Thomas stood at the head of the table.
A gun in one hand.
A folder in the other.
“You finally understand,” he said.
I walked into the room.
Behind me were Michael, Rose, David, Melissa, and Emily.
Thomas smiled.
“You should have stayed ignorant.”
“I tried.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You trusted people.”
I looked at David.
“Yes.”
Thomas laughed.
“That's what destroyed you.”
I looked at the documents.
“Why did my father do this?”
“Money.”
“Only money?”
“No.”
He paused.
“Power.”
He walked toward the table.
“Your father discovered wealthy families would pay enormous amounts for children.”
My stomach turned.
“He created the network.”
“Yes.”
“And you helped him.”
“Yes.”
“How many children?”
Thomas looked at the files.
“Four hundred and twelve.”
Emily gasped.
I felt sick.
“Where are they?”
“Most grew up never knowing.”
“And the others?”
“Dead.”
Silence.
Michael clenched his fists.
“You killed them.”
Thomas shrugged.
“Some were inconvenient.”
I looked at him.
“You murdered children.”
He smiled.
“Don't pretend you're morally superior. Your husband worked for us.”
I turned toward David.
He nodded.
“I did.”
Thomas laughed.
“He delivered names.”
David's face hardened.
“Until I stopped.”
“You stopped when you fell in love.”
“Yes.”
“And your reward?”
Thomas looked at me.
“She spent twenty-eight years believing you were her husband.”
David said nothing.
Thomas pointed the gun at him.
“You were supposed to deliver Claire to us.”
I stared at David.
“What?”
Thomas continued.
“Your mother saved you.”
“From you?”
“Yes.”
“And David?”
“Was supposed to bring you back.”
I looked at David.
“Did you ever intend to?”
“No.”
Thomas laughed.
“He chose love over money.”
I looked at David.
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because if you knew, you'd become a target.”
“I was already a target.”
“I know.”
I shook my head.
“You should have trusted me.”
“Yes.”
The simplicity of his answer hurt.
Thomas stepped closer.
“Enough.”
He pointed the gun at me.
“Give me the key.”
I held it up.
“You want this?”
“Yes.”
“Then come get it.”
He narrowed his eyes.
“You think I won't shoot?”
“No.”
I looked around the room.
“At least now I know you need me alive.”
His expression changed.
Michael smiled.
“She figured it out.”
Thomas's gun moved toward him.
“Stay back.”
Michael raised his hands.
Thomas looked at me.
“Give me the key.”
I placed it on the table.
Thomas approached.
Slowly.
He reached for it.
Then Emily spoke.
“Dad.”
David looked at her.
She held up her phone.
“I recorded everything.”
Thomas froze.
“What?”
“Everything you said.”
Thomas's face changed.
Emily continued.
“And it's already uploaded.”
Thomas looked at David.
David smiled.
“You lost.”
Thomas raised the gun.
Michael moved.
A shot exploded.
The table overturned.
Glass shattered.
Everyone screamed.
I fell to the floor.
David tackled Thomas.
They crashed against the wall.
Michael grabbed the gun.
Thomas struck David across the face.
David fell.
Thomas reached for another weapon.
Then Rose screamed:
“STOP!”
Everyone froze.
Rose stood in front of him.
Thomas stared at her.
“You.”
Rose's voice shook.
“You killed my mother.”
Thomas smiled.
“She was weak.”
“You took my life.”
“She was protecting you.”
“No.”
Rose stepped closer.
“She was protecting Claire.”
Thomas's expression changed.
Rose continued.
“And now she's going to expose you.”
Thomas looked at me.
I held the metal box.
“You want the trust?”
“Yes.”
“It's already gone.”
His eyes widened.
“What?”
“I gave the files to the police.”
Thomas stared at me.
“When?”
“Before I came here.”
His face collapsed.
“No.”
I nodded.
“The entire archive.”
Thomas looked around the room.
“You're lying.”
“I wish I were.”
Sirens sounded outside.
Thomas backed away.
Police lights flashed through the windows.
He looked at David.
Then at Michael.
Then at me.
“You don't know what you've started.”
I stepped closer.
“Yes.”
I looked at the hundreds of files.
“I know exactly what I've started.”
Thomas raised his gun.
Before he could fire, Michael tackled him.
The weapon slid across the floor.
Police stormed into the room.
Thomas was arrested.
David was taken to the hospital.
Melissa gave a statement.
Michael handed over every document he had.
Rose refused to leave my side.
And Emily stood beside me as the police carried boxes of evidence out of the house.
At sunrise, the old Carter estate was surrounded by police cars.
For the first time, there was no secret left inside those walls.
Only consequences.
I stood beside Emily.
She took my hand.
“Mom.”
“Yes?”
“Are you going to divorce Dad?”
I looked toward the ambulance where David was being treated.
“Yes.”
She nodded.
Then she asked:
“Do you still love him?”
I thought about the man he had been.
The man I had married.
The man who had lied.
The man who had protected me.
The man who had betrayed me.
“Yes,” I said.
Emily looked surprised.
“But love isn't always enough.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
I looked at the sunrise.
For the first time in twenty-eight years, I wasn't someone's wife.
Someone's secret.
Someone's protected daughter.
I was simply myself.
May you like
Claire Hayes.
And I was going home.
