Chapter 2: A Truth No One Expected
The divorce was finalized before I reached my seventh month.
Daniel didn't just leave.
He celebrated.
Photos of him and his new girlfriend, Vanessa, filled social media.
Luxury vacations.
Designer clothes.
Champagne.
Every caption carried the same message.
"Finally free."
People believed him.
Former friends stopped calling.
Neighbors whispered whenever I walked by.
Even my own mother asked quietly,
"Are you sure there's nothing you haven't told me?"
That hurt more than Daniel ever could.
When labor began, I was alone.
After fourteen exhausting hours, I heard two cries.
A boy.
Then a girl.
I cried harder than they did.
The DNA test was performed before we even left the hospital.
Daniel arrived wearing an expensive suit and an even bigger ego.
Vanessa followed behind him.
"So," Daniel said.
"Ready to admit the truth?"
The nurse handed the sealed envelope to the pediatrician.
The room became still.
The doctor opened the report.
Read it once.
Then again.
Finally she looked directly at Daniel.
"The results are conclusive."
Daniel smiled.
"I knew it."
The doctor didn't smile back.
"Both children are yours."
His smile disappeared.
"But..."
She continued.
"Genetically, they are full siblings."
"There is no evidence of another biological father."
Vanessa stared at him.
"So...you destroyed your marriage..."
"...for nothing?"
Daniel couldn't answer.
