CHAPTER 14 — THE MAN WHO BETRAYED HIS OWN BLOOD

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Daniel stared at Richard.

His father looked like a broken man.

For twenty-three years, Daniel had imagined this moment.

He had imagined embracing his father.

Demanding answers.

Maybe forgiving him.

He had never imagined standing across from him with a gunman behind the door and hearing the words:

Your father betrayed me.

Daniel's voice was barely a whisper.

“Is it true?”

Richard didn't answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Did you give Michael's location to Samuel?”

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“Did you give him Emily's location?”

“Yes.”

“And mine?”

Richard closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Emily covered her mouth.

Michael looked away.

Daniel laughed once.

It wasn't amusement.

It was disbelief.

“So everything you told me was a lie.”

“No.”

Richard looked at him.

“Not everything.”

“Which part was true?”

“I loved you.”

Daniel's expression cracked.

“That isn't enough.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me grow up without you.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me marry Emily.”

Richard's eyes dropped.

“Yes.”

“You knew she was my sister.”

“I discovered it too late.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“You knew.”

Richard finally nodded.

“Yes.”

Daniel's breathing became heavier.

“Why?”

Richard's voice trembled.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Afraid of Samuel?”

“Yes.”

“Afraid of Victor?”

“Yes.”

“Afraid of losing your money?”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what?”

Richard looked at him.

“I was afraid of becoming the man I hated.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Richard looked toward the basement.

“Your grandfather taught me one thing.”

“What?”

“That power doesn't disappear when you destroy a criminal.”

“It transfers.”

Daniel stared.

Richard continued.

“Samuel wanted me to replace him.”

“And you did.”

“No.”

“I tried to destroy the network.”

“But you failed.”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

Richard's voice broke.

“I compromised.”

Daniel stared.

“Compromised how?”

“I gave Samuel information.”

“To save yourself.”

“To save my children.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You sacrificed one child to save another.”

Richard couldn't answer.

Michael looked at him.

“You gave me away.”

Richard nodded.

“You gave Emily away.”

“Yes.”

“You gave Daniel away.”

Richard whispered,

“Yes.”

Michael's jaw tightened.

“And then you called it protection.”

Richard looked at him.

“I thought I could control Samuel.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“You couldn't control yourself.”

Richard looked down.

“I know.”

Suddenly Samuel stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Everyone turned.

Samuel pointed the gun toward Richard.

“Tell them the rest.”

Richard went pale.

Daniel looked at him.

“What rest?”

Richard didn't speak.

Samuel smiled.

“Tell your son who actually ordered the pantry punishment.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

Richard stared at the floor.

Samuel raised the gun.

“Tell him.”

Richard whispered,

“I did.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“I ordered Evelyn to lock Anna in the pantry.”

Emily's face went white.

Daniel stared.

“You?”

Richard nodded.

“Why?”

“To frighten you.”

Daniel stepped backward.

“You used my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she was five.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she was terrified of the dark.”

“Yes.”

“You still ordered it.”

Richard's voice cracked.

“Yes.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“I thought Mom did it.”

“She did.”

“But you told her to.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked toward the pantry.

The same room where his daughter had cried.

The same door she had pounded.

The same place where he had first discovered the truth.

“You turned my daughter into bait.”

Richard shook his head.

“I needed you to find the calendar.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“The calendar.”

“You planted it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To make you suspect Evelyn.”

Daniel stared.

“And that would lead you here.”

“Yes.”

“To the ledger.”

“Yes.”

“To the trust.”

“Yes.”

Richard looked at him.

“I needed you to activate it.”

Daniel suddenly understood.

The entire mystery had been constructed around him.

The pantry.

The calendar.

The farmhouse.

The cemetery.

Michael.

Emily.

Everything had pushed him toward one final action.

Activation.

Samuel smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You and Richard worked together.”

“For a time.”

Richard shook his head.

“I never wanted this.”

Samuel laughed.

“You always wanted power.”

“I wanted my children alive.”

“And you were willing to sacrifice them.”

Richard looked broken.

Samuel turned to Daniel.

“Your father built the trap.”

“I simply waited for you to walk into it.”

Daniel tightened his grip around the black box.

“What happens when I activate the trust?”

Samuel smiled.

“The network is exposed.”

“And me?”

“You become the legal controller of every account.”

Daniel frowned.

“Meaning?”

“Every illegal transaction will be linked to you.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“Because I'm the guardian.”

“Yes.”

“Then you planned to frame me.”

Samuel nodded.

“And Richard helped.”

Daniel turned toward his father.

Richard whispered,

“I didn't know that part.”

Daniel's expression was cold.

“You knew enough.”

A siren sounded outside.

Then another.

Samuel looked toward the window.

His smile faded.

Michael noticed.

“What happened?”

Samuel didn't answer.

Nora looked outside.

“There are police everywhere.”

Samuel cursed.

Daniel looked at her.

“Who called them?”

Nora shook her head.

“I did.”

Everyone turned.

Samuel stared at her.

“You?”

Nora nodded.

“I knew this would happen.”

“You betrayed me.”

“No.”

She looked at Daniel.

“I corrected my mistake.”

Samuel raised his gun.

Michael stepped in front of Nora.

“Put it down.”

Samuel laughed.

“You think police can stop this?”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at the black box.

“The evidence can.”

Samuel's eyes moved toward it.

“Give me the box.”

Daniel stepped backward.

“No.”

Samuel pointed the gun.

“Daniel.”

“No.”

“Open the trust.”

“No.”

“Then your daughter dies.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“You've threatened her all night.”

“And I've kept my promises.”

Daniel stared.

Samuel raised the weapon.

“Put the box on the table.”

Daniel didn't move.

Then Emily stepped beside him.

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

She whispered,

“Open it.”

Daniel stared.

“Why?”

“Because I know what's inside.”

“What?”

“The original trust agreement.”

“And?”

Emily looked toward Samuel.

“It contains a clause he doesn't know about.”

Samuel's expression changed.

“What clause?”

Emily smiled faintly.

“The truth clause.”

Daniel frowned.

“What is that?”

Emily answered,

“If the trust is activated under coercion, every hidden record is automatically released.”

Samuel went pale.

Daniel looked at her.

“You're sure?”

“Yes.”

Richard suddenly looked terrified.

“Emily…”

She turned toward him.

“You didn't know.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“Because Dad never told you.”

Daniel looked at his father.

“Dad?”

Richard remained silent.

Emily continued.

“The trust wasn't designed to protect the family.”

“It was designed to expose everyone.”

Daniel looked at Samuel.

“So if I activate it…”

“Everything becomes public.”

Samuel raised his gun.

“Don't.”

Daniel smiled.

For the first time that night—

Samuel was afraid.

Daniel placed the black box on the table.

He opened it.

Inside was a small biometric reader.

He looked at his daughter.

She was trembling.

“Daddy?”

Daniel crouched.

“It's okay.”

“Are we going home?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Soon.”

He kissed her forehead.

Then he stood.

Samuel watched.

“Do it.”

Daniel placed his hand on the reader.

Nothing happened.

Samuel frowned.

“Why isn't it activating?”

Daniel looked at Emily.

She smiled.

“You need the guardian.”

Daniel frowned.

“I am the guardian.”

“No.”

“What?”

“You were never the guardian.”

Daniel stared.

Emily pointed toward Richard.

“He was.”

Richard's face went pale.

Daniel turned.

“You?”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

Samuel laughed.

“Then activate it.”

Richard stepped forward.

“No.”

Samuel pointed the gun.

“Now.”

Richard looked at Daniel.

“I am sorry.”

He placed his hand on the reader.

A red light appeared.

Then turned green.

The box opened.

A tiny screen illuminated.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

RICHARD CARTER.

TRUST ACTIVATION IN PROGRESS.

Samuel stepped forward.

“No.”

The screen displayed:

COERCION DETECTED.

Samuel's face changed.

Then:

EMERGENCY RELEASE AUTHORIZED.

Daniel stared.

“What happens now?”

Emily answered.

“Everything.”

The lights in the house flickered.

Phones began vibrating.

Michael's phone.

Nora's.

Daniel's.

Even Samuel's.

A notification appeared.

CARTER TRUST — EVIDENCE RELEASED.

Daniel stared.

Files began appearing.

Bank records.

Videos.

Audio recordings.

Photographs.

Medical documents.

Police reports.

Names.

Thousands of them.

The entire network.

Samuel looked at his phone.

His face went white.

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You lost.”

Samuel suddenly raised the gun.

Michael fired first.

Samuel's weapon flew from his hand.

Police stormed through the doorway.

“DROP TO THE FLOOR!”

Samuel slowly raised his hands.

Richard collapsed into a chair.

Daniel stood motionless.

The nightmare was ending.

But then his phone displayed one final file.

FINAL RECORDING — DO NOT IGNORE.

Daniel opened it.

A video appeared.

His father.

But this recording was different.

Richard looked directly into the camera.

“If you're watching this, then I failed.”

Daniel stared.

Richard continued.

“I know what I did.”

“I know what I became.”

“But there is one thing I need you to understand.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“I did not create the trust to protect my fortune.”

“I created it because I knew one day my children would need the truth.”

Richard paused.

“And if Samuel is still alive…”

His expression became serious.

“…then the real enemy is not him.”

Daniel froze.

Richard continued.

“Samuel is only the gatekeeper.”

“The person behind him has been inside our family for twenty-three years.”

Daniel's heart stopped.

Emily whispered,

“No.”

Richard looked toward the camera.

“I was afraid to name that person.”

“Because naming them would put my children in immediate danger.”

“But if you're seeing this now…”

He took a breath.

“…then there is no reason to remain silent.”

Daniel leaned closer.

Richard spoke one final sentence.

“The person who ordered your father's murder…”

The video froze.

Then resumed.

“…was your grandmother.”

Daniel stared.

His mother's mother.

The woman who had supposedly died years ago.

The woman whose portrait still hung in the Carter mansion.

The woman everyone believed had been powerless.

Daniel's face went pale.

Then another file opened automatically.

A photograph.

An elderly woman.

Alive.

Standing beside Samuel.

And beneath the photograph was a name:

MARGARET CARTER.

Daniel whispered,

“She’s alive.”

Emily nodded.

“And she's coming.”

Outside the estate, tires screeched.

A black limousine stopped at the gate.

The rear door opened.

An elderly woman stepped out.

She looked toward the house.

Then smiled.

Because she had been waiting twenty-three years to see her family again.

May you like

And she wasn't coming to apologize.

She was coming to take back everything.
