Chapter 12 - A FATHER’S PRICE

Salvatore called Luca directly.
Matteo’s voice was heard in the background.
Alive.
Angry.
“Don’t give him anything.”
Salvatore struck something near the phone.
Matteo went silent.
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“What do you want?”
“The Palermo action withdrawn.”
“No.”
“Then Matteo suffers for your principles.”
Luca closed his eyes.
There was the old family language again.
Loyalty.
Sacrifice.
Blood.
All used to make control sound sacred.
“You’re threatening your own son.”
“I’m preserving what belongs to him.”
“He doesn’t want it.”
“He doesn’t know what he wants.”
Luca looked at Rachel.
She heard the call on speaker.
Her expression hardened.
Salvatore continued.
“And you are allowing a nurse and a toddler to erase a century.”
Rachel almost laughed.
Luca didn’t.
“You still don’t understand.”
“What?”
“Emma isn’t erasing anything.”
He looked at his daughter.
“She’s the reason I finally saw what was already rotten.”
Salvatore hung up.
Marco immediately began coordinating with law enforcement contacts and attorneys.
Luca wanted direct action.
Every instinct screamed for it.
Rachel stopped him.
“You promised.”
“Matteo is in danger.”
“I know.”
“I can end it.”
“How?”
Luca said nothing.
Rachel understood.
Violence.
She stepped closer.
“If you solve every threat by becoming the thing you’re trying to leave, then you’re not leaving.”
That infuriated him because it was true.
They used evidence.
Financial pressure.
Legal warrants tied to the kidnapping.
Matteo had already been cooperating with investigators, which meant his disappearance triggered more than family retaliation.
Salvatore’s safe properties were searched.
Nothing.
Then Emma said something.
“Grandpa ring man likes horses.”
Everyone turned.
“What?”
She was coloring.
“The car man.”
Luca crouched.
“What horses?”
“He talked to horse picture lady.”
Rachel frowned.
“Emma, when?”
“At school.”
A preschool fundraiser had displayed photographs from local businesses.
One sponsor:
Bellini Equestrian Center.
Owned through Salvatore.
Marco looked at Luca.
No dramatic raid followed from Luca’s men.
Police handled it.
Matteo was found in an office on the property.
Shaken.
Bruised.
Alive.
Salvatore was gone.
Matteo emerged under a blanket.
He looked at Luca.
“I told you he’d pick the empire over me.”
Luca’s chest hurt.
Matteo laughed bitterly.
“Guess we both had fathers who thought inheritance was love.”
Salvatore’s escape did not last.
But before capture, he made one final move.
He sent every major Bellini captain evidence claiming Luca planned to surrender them to federal authorities.
Some true.
Some altered.
The organization split.
Men panicked.
Old alliances collapsed.
The empire began turning against itself.
Marco said:
“This could become a war.”
Luca looked toward Emma’s room.
“No.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean there will be no Bellini side fighting for territory.”
“Then we lose everything.”
Luca looked at him.
“That’s the point.”
He ordered criminal operations shut down wherever he retained authority.
Records preserved.
Legitimate employees protected.
Attorneys contacted prosecutors.
Marco stared.
“You know what cooperation could cost you personally.”
“Yes.”
“Charges.”
“Yes.”
“Prison.”
“Possibly.”
Rachel had entered silently.
Luca looked at her.
“I told you I was leaving.”
She whispered:
“I didn’t ask you to destroy yourself.”
“No.”
He looked toward Emma.
“I’m trying to stop handing her a life that requires somebody else to be destroyed.”
For the first time, Rachel crossed the room and kissed his cheek.
Not romance.
Not yet.
A promise that she saw the man he was trying to become.
Then Luca’s defibrillator fired.
One violent jolt.
May you like
He collapsed.
And while Rachel screamed his name, Luca Bellini learned that changing his life did not mean his heart would wait patiently for him to finish.
